ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

In WA HELLA grommets (who are no where near ready) are skating the faster, more techincal runs. Someone is going to get dead. In response to this, we are taking an Adelaide approach and banning the skating of some hills.

I'm sure groms are doing stupid shit all over the country as well. Lets scare em' into submission - Post your gnarliest crash/ injury.

something ive seen recently is a group of skaters on z-flexs bombing hills WAY out of there league its actually scary what these kids are doing and this morning i saw them come down a hill and almost take out some primary school kids crossing the road to a bus stop they came flying down the hill doin about 40 ALL of them had speed wobbles and 3 of them crashed (not wearing any safety gear) and the other 2 came within inches of smashing in to these kids and there parents i happened to be skating down the opposite hill as i do most mornings and had to avoid all 5 of them scattered on the road i gave them a bit of a talk but then got yelled at by the parents for encouraging these idiots to skate and i ve never met them before. no matter what i sad they said if they saw any skaters around in the mornings they would call the police so a great hill of mine which normally is the quietest hill aroud my place maybe 1 car in an hour goes down it so whoever you were z-flex skaters thank very bloody much for ruining my morning skate and also possibly one of my favourite hills. and i know the cops will be called coz the local patrol car pulled me up onanother run to warn me about not skating it anymore.

for gods sake be aware of your surroundings and know your limits

The hill ''ban'' began in Radelaide maybe 2 years ago? It was not so much a ban but a request for our groms to stay off these certain roads until we had the chance to skate with them and get an idea of who was at what level of experience. We got the RAG's going (Radelaide Alpha Groms) who basically were the groms we would skate with on a regular basis. If they noticed another grom at a session who they thought should come out and was capable of riding the gnarlier hills they would let us know and we could get in touch with the kid.

It has gotton to the point now where those groms who we regularly ride with still send me emails saying ''is it cool if me and him skate this road on Saturady?'' I'm in FINLAND and I'm still getting these emails. We had some troubles with it but once the kids worked out the system it has been going well. They knew that they had to impress these ''alpha groms'' before they had to impress us. They couldn't just tell us on facebook that they were ready, they had to show one of the kids and he would judge it. It began to police itself after a while too, kids who wanted to do the right thing would tell off the kids who were doing the wrong thing. When the rebellion began and we started to get kids say ''fuck that, don't wanna skate with the older guys anyway'' we came up with the rule that anyone caught riding the hills without us or without permission would be banned from future races, outlaws and sanctioned. That worked a treat!

Now everything is going pretty well I think, people are riding hills they are able to ride. The Alpha groms are almost old enough to own a car and have there own sessions now which will create more mobile crews instead of just one big crew based around Leigh, Bow and myself. It gets worse before it get's better and I think Radelaide is finally starting to see the light.

Good read this thread.

Out west we have been having a lot more drama with police and angry residents - Far more than usual. After a quick FB poll to find out who was skating what. We were pretty bewildered to find that 30 or 40 kids are skating some pretty gnarly downhill runs, and more than twice that are skating some of the more technical freeride spots (grommet exaggeration taken into account). On account of the numbers of kids skating, the increased police patrols (we have even found out they are monitoring the west aussie downhill facebook page), and all the un-stoked residents. We have put a TOTAL ban on skating anywhere in the hills for the next couple of weeks.

We are doing this to give the residents a break, and to give us some time to put something similar to an Adelaide style approach into place.

I would just like to put it out there also, we are not doing this to keep all our runs to ourselves (we keep those ones secret) but to make this sport more viable, safer and with hopefully, anyway, less police interference for EVERYBODY.

If anyone has any advice or thoughts on this please post up, or even PM me. It would be much appreciated.

Shred West.

On this note Ian, last year we went into the local Ambulance station to let them know about BtB and when it was on. They already knew as the operators on the 000 lines spend their spare time between calls trolling through the car cruise forums, etc to see where and when cruises are happening and where to check the illegally modified cars. They also check the skate/longboard forums to see what is happening, they monitor the vids that show crew crossing lines and also where the runs are, they also keep an eye on where outlaw races are to be held and when, which is why they turn up to so many. If they think it is reasonably safe and they are cool they'll let it go but if they think it is dangerous or their misses has given them grief that morning they may shut it down. Moral of the story don't post sessions on here and be aware that you are being watched!

Cool insider info Ado!

This is a joke story. But you know..... maybe its not far off.

Good to know. Cheers mate.

As an older grom (been longboarding for 3 months and i'm 26), I do little things to try and convert the general public from haters to admirers. I take my board everywhere with me and I mean EVERYWHERE! I ALWAYS have my helmet and gloves handy (either in my bag or wearing them, depending on the situation), I'm polite to the public and respectful towards other wheelie board riders, I don't swear heavily in public and refrain from swearing altogether when kids are are around. I'm by no means a pussy and have modified my small amount of knowledge in various martial arts to incorporate my longboard in a fight (defensively ONLY. like if a guy takes a swing, I block with my board and just let him bury his fist into my vicious haha). I'm slowly making progress and have turned a handful of people from wanting to call the cops just cause I was bombing a little hill where they live, to being greeted with a friendly smile and wave whenever I see them now by just being friendly, calm and opening their eyes to the fact that their is no reason to hate. With the right attitude and demeanour, it's surprising how easily stoke can rub off on others :D. Not all people can be converted and to that I say haters gonna hate and skaters gonna skate ;)
