ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

In WA HELLA grommets (who are no where near ready) are skating the faster, more techincal runs. Someone is going to get dead. In response to this, we are taking an Adelaide approach and banning the skating of some hills.

I'm sure groms are doing stupid shit all over the country as well. Lets scare em' into submission - Post your gnarliest crash/ injury.

Obviously you're not understanding the seriousness of the situation Kelly in that its only going to take the death or serious injury of 1 or 2 "ignorant retards" or as I prefer to call them young and inexperienced riders that will fuck the scene up for everyone. For the moment, here at least, the police and authorities have been pretty cool and have continued to let us ride on most occassions. These attitudes will quickly change once news of splattered grom/s hit the headlines. I don't really undertstand the Adelaide situation but I think we all need step up in an attempt to prevent fatalities of all riders young and old.

C'mon guys, shut up with this generalisation of groms. A lot of them are good smart kids, i skate with most of them. They're willing to ask if they can come skate spots with crew, not all of them are ignorant retards

i dont mean to stir the pot here, but there have been many many people die from skateboarding since it first started. its no new thing...

Skateboarding is a dangerous thing, we all understand that. sometimes it kills people, its tough but it is what it is. Just like driving cars, young or inexperienced people get behind the wheel with no sense in them at all and crash it and they are now dead. it happens...

There are 'ignorant retards' everywhere in the world. in every aspect of life. you have to accept that there ARE people out there who will just never do the right thing. the sooner you become aware of that the better, because once YOU are aware that YOU are not a retard and your doing the right thing then your in the good books. All you can do is help guide those around you and point them in the right direction if you feel others aren't doing it right.

I hate to sound like a prick but if someone dies from skateboarding its not going to put a stop to it. sure it would be a tragedy but it will not discontinue the rest of us riding. Not sure how long most people on this website have been around the scene before but deaths from skateboarding have happened many times before, right here in our own community aswell.

You can all post up on ASRA telling the kids not to do dumb shit, and they will listen. The thing is its the dumb kids who DONT use ASRA are the ones who dont get the message... thats what you have to be aware of...

people can and will die from skateboarding. it sucks but thats life... just be smart and safe and you will live longer. simple

Harsh truths there Jacko. You are right but I think its best to do everything we can to avoid that situation.

We do have some great kids in adelaide but there will always be those who over estimate their ability or refuse to listen to reason. Its been really cool to see groms in adelaide attempting to control this by calling other groms out when they are skating stupidly or beyond their ability.

For those who insist on skating above their ability, stupidly or dangerously, its important to remember that the person driving the car for you has a duty of care for you if your are under 18. Whether its your parent, friends parent or older skater if your hurt yourself or worse they are legally responsible. Its not just your own life and the scene you have the potential to fuck up.

Yeah, fair comments Jacko. I've only been involved with longboarding for a few years now so a bit of a newb to the scene, i'm not even a good skater plus i'm old. You'd have to admit though that downhill would have to be 2 or 3 times as dangerous as park or freeriding, this is an extreme sport.

What concerns me is the guys at the top of the tree with more than enough experience posting vids smashing hills illegally. While i love watching the vids and could only dream of doing it myself I dont think this is setting a good example to the younger generation who look up to these guys as gods.

The point i'm trying to make is that while the sport is going through unprecedented growth i don't want the scene to be placed under additional pressure of being moved along because some kids got smashed up trying to be like Jacko (could read anyone). I'm an adrenalin junkie from years back and i'm far from the most law abiding citizen either, i don't know what the answers are just putting my 20 cents on the table.

This is a generation gap thing, but recently I met some kids that sessioned a seriously gnarly hill with no safety gear, and they did not have the basics of sliding or foor braking worked out, and just ran-off into the grass when it all got too fast.

When suggested that eventhough the traffic was not an issue (quiet country road), doing it without helmet or any other safety gear was high risk...in a gravel rash or high-side-head-butt-face-plant to the pavement kind of way, and they should learn to slide or foot-brake also, I got heaps of attitude, to the point where I had to say "whatever" and walk away.

One of them did show off some pretty uncomfortable gravel rash, but the others knew better, cause they were way more rad!

Can anyone give us old gits some guidance on what or how to say "be careful" to groms, or a phone number of a wise grom that will take their calls, or do we just stand back enjoy the show.

I don't think taking the videos down or only showing legal roads would change a thing.

There is the factor of wanting to be like Jacko, James Kelly or any awesome skater for that matter, but that's healthy.  It's the kids that don't know their boundaries.  Those videos are marketing and what drives the sport further to some extent.

The best thing we can do as a community, as Jacko did point out, is steer people (or groms) in the right direction.  Shunning them until they are a certain level probably won't do anything positive, but helping them grow and develope their skills will.  It's all just education, which seems to be lacking with some of the kids these days...

from my experiences, ive noticed that all around the country the groms seem to kno their limits,.sure theres a few who go a bit overboard and ride above themselves, but most seem to kno within themselves that they can get seriously injured or killed.

'Skating down gnarly hills' seems to regulate itself pretty good i recon, because the skaters that are not ready but choose to take it on dont get very far and crash......usually resulting in a firm wake up call for them..as most crashes dont result in serious injury or death,.

ive seen lots of skaters start riding above themselves only to crash hard, get injured quite badly and either give up the sport or slow the hell down and make them realise that it IS dangerous and maybe next time they find themselves in the wrong spot the result might be much worse....im not saying everyone gets chances to get it right, just the odds are that most are going to learn from their mistakes before it kills them, sure there is always going to be the 'unlucky' factor, but as previously said you can get unlucky and die from anything.

people are filming and documenting all types of crazy stuff, that the public or general population arent about to do,.we all watch car races on tv but not many of us go and try and race at 300kph in our cars,.people are jumping off cliffs with wingsuits, but there are not people lining up to do it,.. some of the sydney hills have been well documented in the past and the locations are no longer secrets but there is still only a small percentage of skaters riding them,..like everything, their will always be strays that wont be educated, but apart from that all we can do is stress the dangers to the unaware best we can,....

im amazed at the great people longboarding seems to attract,.i havnt heard of a grommet yet who has taken a stand against the older gen and said fuk you clints im gunna do wat i want,.everyone so far has shown respect for their own lives and their local hills,...and have taken advice,.

funny how the mood of disscussions change,.in the past myself and others have been dubbed 'elitist' and 'egotistical' pricks for putting our foot down and saying ya or na when its come to people wanting to skate various hills,..

i sleep well at night knowing that i tell people how it is for all the right reasons.

Amen to that brother

My mate and I were doing about 65-70ish the other day ( a speed we have done before and were reasonably comfortable with ) and he happened to hit a bump and come off hitting the back of his head. He was wearing a full face and gloves and knee pads but still was knocked unconcious. He then woke and had a seisure then lost conciousness again. The ambo guy said he potentially could have brain damage while we were in the ambulance it worked out alright though. He also hit the inside of his elbow on his footstop and put a decent hole in his elbow. We aren't the kind of kids that will do stupid things and skate out of our limits but it certainly made us realise we need to become more comfortable at speeds between 60 - 70 before we move on.

Theres no question about it that there will always be dickheads. There will always be the few people who dont care and ruin it for everyone. I know that(at least in adelaide) if someone is doing something very stupid on a skateboard then it will be noticed and something will be done about it. You cant stop everyone though.

If you tell someone they can't ride somewhere, Especially some young go getter with a hunger for thrills, it's almost like a dare!

Silence prevails. Tell no one about a danger site and you can outbreed the danger. It will die forgotten.

Speak to your local community person to person, set the example and keep it safe.

There's a hill in Wollongong where I came within 2m of instant death.

80km/h+ hill, removalist truck pulls out and blocks whole road. My friend was filming near enough to scream out to driver just before we arrive, truck starts to go back up driveway on left, I steer around right (wrong lane) to find a 4WD waiting other side.

I thread the needle between the very small gap between still doing 70km+. Shit my leathers, abuse guy who said it was clear to ride (we had CB radios) ,pack up and drive home counting lucky stars.

Sliding would have put me under the car or truck, hard with serious injury. Sometimes staying upright gives you more control to evade danger. I never want to have to make that decision ever again.
