been eyeing off Japan for a while now and hoping to get there next year. those dudes have welcomed me in the past.

Where in Japan? I'll be in Tokyo from December to January. I'll be hooking up with a crew there as well.

Japan has a bazillion fantastic mountain roads - 80% of the country is mountains, and they have a lot of roads through it all. The road surfaces can be a problem though, because the winters tend to wreck things with freeze and thaw cycles creating big cracks, and the chains on car tyres chewing into the surface, and the general fact that the ground in Japan is kinda soft, and roads often end up sinking under the tyre tracks. The counter to all that is that Japan puts a lot of money into public-sector stuff like road building, so all those problems I mentioned get fixed reasonably frequently.

But the big problem is that January is mid-winter, so you'll issues with snow and ice on the road, and with the fact that the roads will be crammed with the cars of skiers and snowboarders, although you'll find that weekdays will have a fraction of the traffic as weekends. That can't be stressed enough - mountain roads are impossibly traffic-filled on weekends, but on weekdays, especially in the middle of the day between the morning and afternoon ski-resort peak-flow, you might have some luck. But you'll need some local knowledge I reckon.

Tokyo is mostly flat. In January I reckon you should concentrate on the snowboarding rather than the skateboarding.

I know of some roads that won't be packed. The surrounding part of tokyo is covered with hills and mountain passes. But yes, snow is an issue. It doesn't snow that much in Tokyo though. When it does, it only snows for a little bit.

Thanks guys. Ill try and organise something for around tokyo!

Hey Chad, just find a skate/snowboard/surf shop & take a usb stick with some vid of ya self,(or rock up with a board if your takin' one), & just ask them to take you skating! Just keep asking & someone will sort you out. Before you know it you'll have more crew than ya can poke a stick at & you know I'm talking from experience. But as Bugs said just concentrate on the snowboardin & next time go to Niseko I lived there for 4 years when you & Kye were just babies & the powder is to die for!

Awesome choice. I'm going to japan on feb 7 for 2 weeks to snowboard around Niseko area. But because my friends are loser faces and bailed i am now doing this solo hitting different resorts and staying in a hostel. Thats cool but if anyone wants to get rad in Hokkiado powder with me. PM me.

Damn dude hit me up next time you go. I was in Japan for a couple of weeks March/April, we hit up Happoo-ne near Nagano. Best snow I've ever ridden, way better than the Cascades Concrete we get around Seattle.
