Hey guys, I had a crash a while ago and hit my head and theres a bit on my helmet that is sort of 2 chips out of the first layer and you can see the fibreglass. I put some waterproof glue over it just in case rain damages the fibreglass and I just want to know if the helmet is still up to racing standards?
Cheers
Helmets are a single use item. Once they're used to protect your head in a serious accident it is most likely not safe to use again. There is a foam liner inside the shell that takes the impact when you bash your head and once this is damaged it's done. It may look fine on the outside but chances are on the inside its buggered and won't offer much protection. The outer shell is really just there to protect the thick slab of foam inside. I don't think you'd get it through inspection with out a bit of hassle.
not now that everyone knows about it...
Mine has damage on the chin from scraping on the road in a crash. It wasn't an impact to the chin piece, but scraped as I slid and wore the paint down to the fibre glass. I raced two more IGSA races with it and tech inspection said nothing. IGSA tech inspect is a joke. Don't rely on them, use your own noodle. If you can remember clearly weather or not you hit your head or if it maybe just slid along the ground, then go from there. Don't take any second chances, if you can't remember then toss it and get a new one. Like James said, all helmets are one use only.
Fucking Will morphett!!!
Last year I kooked an early grab slamming my head into the ground.. Ruining my helmet I had at the time. It cracked and wore a flat spot from where I impacted the ground.
At the next race.. I had put a sticker over one crack, and duck tape over the other.. Even though they knew my helmet was fucked.. it still passed.
I'd still wear the helmet you have. But as people are saying personal opinion as to home much you trust your 'broken helmet'
