Doing an assignment for uni and got to choose the topic so I chose my one love.
I need to do research though so I'm wondering if yous can help me out.
Just tell me what got you involved in skating to begin with and what makes you live your life by it?

i started skating as a method of avoiding uni work! kept going to continue avoiding uni work!
I got into it because I lost my license and needed transport, and because of surfing. When the surf was flat, you'd go surf pavement instead. The thing thats changed now is that I'd rather surf down mountains with rad crew then go surfing.
Live your life by it? I think this sentence from that article actually summarises it.
"Skaters just do what they love to do: skate, all the time. Skateboarding is fun, and when having fun is the goal, it never seems like training."
So I wouldnt say I live my life by it, but I would say I just love to have fun. So when bombing mountains, chuckin massive predrifts, racing, cruising, railing corners, drafting, freeriding, skate trips etc are all ridiculously fun? Especially when you do all this right next to your best mates who are just as stoked on it as you are... its what I'm gonna do...all the time. Cause skateboarding is FUN.
for me,growing up on the coast, surfing was what we did and skating was what you did when the waves were crap or thru winter when it was cold.
skating banks and driveways we were surfing the pavement, then when i got a drivers license skateparks were accessible and we turned to those and developed a more skate/trick style of riding.
but as years went by the quality surfspots became more crowded, partly thanks to bodyboarding and competition for waves increased to a point were aggresion and localism was the only way to get waves, acting like a mucho man and being a cunt in the surf just to enjoy the ride you longed for.
as surfing started to loose its shine i turned to skating more as it was unlimited,.always offshore in the skate park as they say.
then i discovered longboarding and never turned back,i get the same feeling as if surfing but way faster and way more intense, the flow and the speed is a lot like hauling into a monster set wave, and to this day still the surfer in me governs the way i ride, searching out tree pits at 70-80kph gives me flashbacks of hauling thru heaving gnarly barrels, skating the hill anyway you like is what its about.
the endless ride is what draws me,10klm long hills being way more appealing than scrambling around for a 30 second wave,.the convenience of just jumping on a board and getting your fix is rad.
skateboarding and surf culture will always go hand in hand, because its all about the ride.
the joy of sharing the hill and the stoke with others at the same time is quite the opposite of being agro and hustling for a good wave,.... the reason d/h skating fits for me,......ride for life.
Skate or Die! I choose life.
Reg, I just wrote war and peace on the subject from 1968 to now and have just parked it. If you want to see it, friend me and I'll flick it by PM in your direction - the punters on ASRA do not want to see my rambling and they'll tear me to shreds over it as well. Forever young.

I got my first board in about 1972, it was a Mustang, had felt like substance on the deck. The deck was about 20mm thick and solid, wheels rubber roller sports i think , then somthing awsome happened the mid 70s skateboard boom hit and with it urathane wheels and flexi fibreglass boards,,man were they smooth. The mustang went in the bin and i forked out $60 for a Bahne super flex,,,man it took skating to a new level for us. There would be 20 to 30 skaters at each spot everyday, you got to know every one and push each other,,board shorts and bare feet were the norm. It lasted about 4 or 5 yrs and then started to die down, we got older and found girls and motorcycles and dropped skating, but kept the boards.
Fast foward 30yrs and damed if i didnt see a vid of us skating at Cronulla Public on youtube to the song ,,,Forever Young...got so exited i dusted a couple of the boards of and got right back into it!!,,,The feeling of fluid motion you get from a skateboard is addictive and unforgetable ,,even when your an old bastard ..LOL
