dropthru versus topmount

i just bought a new fp topmount for my son.. i am about to order a new board for myself and i have decided fp is the go for me too, either the topmount, freeride, or nsf (which is a topmount also)  

now putting aside the make of the board, my question is: why a topmount over dropthru or vice versa..are they a different ride, is one more stable than the other, better leaverage, response under foot, or is it purely a preference somewhat like choosing the colour of yer undies vs no undies ?

 

into bombing and freeriding (without the tricks at this stage) carving and looking to go faster.

more grip on a top mount, easier to drift a drop-through board

 

drop throughs are more stable but you dont get as much leverage

 

alot of guys learnt to bomb on lowered boards but then changed to top mounts for the increased grip and performance

 

personal preference

Topmount all the way mate.
All my boards ive topmounted, even my drop throughs and the trend seems to be following on with those with the 925.

Its mostly personal prefrence but topmount you have more control and tration. Makes skating fun and gets the adrenaline pumping. You only have to get your mindset and stop being scared of riding a higher board and you'll be laughing.

Even if you get a drop thru you can topmount it later and griptape over the hole or stick something over it.
Grab the NSF mate, no doubt the best freeride board i have at the moment, yet to try the glyde gnosis i just got which also feels awesome topmounted also.

 

Hope your kid loves the topmount because i love the one i bought with my NSF, got it customed to be alittle smaller on all specs and its a perfect fit, you said you son was like 45kg somewhere i read so the board must be massive against him.

 

Downside of topmount is height - makes it 'harder' to footbreak, put you hand on the ground to slide. <---- apparently.

Upside - easier to change trucks, leverage, traction, responce, you can drag your board without the tail scraping haha all that goodness. stand up checks and stuff are easier as you can get over your front truck more to make it the pivot point easier.

 

Topmount. you'll never go back.

At the end of the day its all down to personal preference. people talk about advantages disadvantages, but those are based on subjective experience. The more you skate the more you get to know what kind of set up is going to work for you. Everyone progresses until they reach the equilibrium. Once their set up becomes an extension of the self, there is no more need to concern about set up.

If you never have any dramas with speedwobbles, get a topmount. If you still feel at all sketchy about your control and stability at speed, go with something lowered. As rob said, you can always topmount a dropthough deck.

Yup youve said it yourself. You need a stiff deck. stiff deck = STABLE. thats a universal fact. stiff decks also make for better slides. Its fine to bounce around if you are just cruising flats, but for hills, a stiff deck will be much more easy to get along with.

Don't worry, sweet beet, that didn't happen from a standie ;)

Hand-down toeside gone wrong - though you'd probably get the same bailing a fast toeside standie.

Just wear kneepads and it's unlikely to happen. If I had worn mine and given myself a safer bail option, I'd still have intact bones today....

 

Enjoy the FP. The freeride is an ultra gnar design. You'd have to be happy with it.

drop throughs tend to slide easier, but top mounts better turning and easier to hold out standies, i have a switchblade and i have topmounted it because one its better turning, two easier to hold slides, three grips a bit more round corners when going fast.

I have a Comet Voodoo D2 and it's a topmount. I feel that is it a bit harder to start the slide (because it is not as close to the ground), but the slide is smother. again it is easier to turn corners and grip at higher speeds.
