ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

The idea of trialing a Super Giant Slalom, is being thrown around, and i would like to know what it takes for an event to be classed as a Super GS and not just a GS.

How many cones?
How long is a SGS course?
Does it matter if the road itself is somewhat technical?
Is it run as a time trial or 1 on 1?
What are the rules for SGS?
Is there anything else i need to know, that i have missed?

Sorry about all the questions, but i really don't know much about slalom.
I've posted this on the ISSA site as well.

chk out the guides at the top of the page /Slalom

have a look at page 12 - pt 9.7 Super GS http://www.skateboardracing.org.au/profiles/blog/show?id=2144162%3A...
Number of cones? - Doesn't really matter.
How long? - Long enough. I reckon about 500 metres would be a good minimum.
Technical road? - Fine, would make it interesting.
Time trial? - Yes, one at a time.
Rules? - there are no rules!

The issue is finding a good road for it. It needs to be steep and to have a smooth surface. The slalom we've done at the Pump Station has some SGS parts to it. I'd love to do a SGS at Mt Panorama, starting just above Forest Elbow and going all the way down Conrod.

Hood River SGS 2007
Don't worry about finding the road Bugs, we've got that sorted.
Smooth as butter, the quality of bitumen is similar to bathurst.

Now i just need to work out how layout these cones.
If anyone has any tips on that, please post up.
you wouldnt get that fast because the slalom would slow you down. we did the GS from just below the dogleg on conrod and we were hitting like 48k's or 58k's cant remember which but either way it was fast for slalom...
on conrod you would set a course so your washing speed the whole way then tighten it up towards the bottom to keep the speed going
I reckon in an SGS down Conrod from Forest you'd probably only hit about 50 km/h. You're not in a tuck, and you're not heading down the fall-line - you're turning all the time. The fun of it is that you're turning hard, on the edge of traction, at 50 km/h, on narrow twitchy trucks, without putting your hands anywhere near the ground. And then doing it again, and again, and again.

As for setting the cones - it depends how much slalom experience the participants have. If they're slalom newbies you're gonna have to make the cone spacings much larger and/or the cone offsets much less. It also depends what gear people are gonna ride. I'd suggest riding the hill a lot and figuring out the tightest cone spacing that would be possible for most riders. That's what I do for setting slalom courses.
i cant wait to race on conrod again!!!

I have a hill which could possibly be better for gs sgs which i would really love to get something going on this year. Depending how far up we would start speeds could definately be faster than conrod for sure, butter smooth wide with street lights!!! Alex bombed it on his downhill board from about 3/4 up and was pushing 80/85 I reckon when he flew past me and i was only 1/3 of the way down!!
The Hood River video looked more like a standard GS to me. It was bloody long tho.

At the GS we did at the Worlds in 2004 the top speed was just over 50 kmh. Pretty fast when you're on a slalom board. At the same time it was totally doable and myself and most people were just on stock trucks, no dramas. I reckon we could go faster than that. I would like to see speeds of up to 60-65 kmh on a SGS and if you set it somewhere like down from Forest Elbow I think that would be attainable.

The Townsville race will host a SGS and I look forward to seeing how the speeds are there.
I hope the speeds are up to scratch.
I wish i could do slalom, or even standup to be able to tell you what the speeds are.

There is plenty of time, maybe i should start learning.

SGS is NOT the place to learn standup of any sort let alone slalom (;-)> !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
