In order of importance what protective gear is needed for down hilling and free skating?

obviously a helmet is the number one thing for anythng... but what should i look at spending my money on after that?

Get some good quality Ladies gardening gloves, laugh if you like but less extra leather on the fingers to catch you thumbs "hurts like hell", make sure they have the velcro wrist tabs to hold them on around 10-20 bucks you will then need to glue velcro onto the palms use quick grip. then get some slippery dip pucks, $26. If your a little strapped for cash i could send you a set of corian pucks 80mm square. they will not last quite as long as slippery dip but they will last months i can post them for like $15 with velcro attached. that gives you long lasting gloves for a good price.
if they have a Boardstore in your area they sell sets of elbow and knee pads for around $60. they are not the best in the world but it will get you rolling and feeling a bit more confident.
Have a look at my page for photos if you want to see the gloves and pads. i have slippery dips but i was lucky enough to win a set.
If cash is not an issue get the pads robbo mentioned and definitely get slippery dips
If I knew that, I would buy 187 from you. Damn.

Pro-tec pads are for riding bowls, 187 flys are the only pads for this kind of shit
robbo, i assume 187 pros are just as good right ?? cause i was gonna get some but if the flys are made specifically for longboarding ill probably get those
For longboarding the Flys are much better than the pros, we stock the pros mainly for bowl skaters, the flys are what you want + they are cheaper and better
oh sweeet. thanks so much, i was just about to buy some pro pads :P
Deffo on the elbow pads. Once you start trying heelside slides you'll likely find yourself hitting the elbows on tarmac a lot. Well I have anyway....
Save money by making your own slide gloves to start out with and spend it on a better deck and other gear.
yeah i'm probably ganna get myself a complete of the board shop, and some gear with it soon, maybe this week. and ye ill attempt to make my own slide gloves for the moment.
