ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

This discussion is aimed at a few individuals who in the past have given me shit about encouraging kids and adults to chuck a helmet on.

Comment by Geoffrey Templer 20 minutes ago (Taking the EOTH)

"my mate fucked up a slide up at frome (carpark) where those tossers put that talcum powder (to make slides easier) and smashed his head and had a seasure.... ambo came after like 10mins :\ great. but he was alright, after bout 2 hours he was well enough to be spotting out the hot nurses :)"

Of course he was NOT wearing a helmet. The kid could've died..... OR WORSE!
Thank someone upstairs that he is ok but now we are one place less to skate in the city. Not only that but if anyone catches wind of this (being anyone from the press) this could be a disaster for us.
They will be cracking down hard in U-parks in Adelaide now that someone has actually been seriousley injured on there property.

This is what happens when older, more experienced people encourage others to ride without a lid. "relax your on private property, it wont hurt", "you dont skate hard or fast enough to do any real damage"

Riding without a lid is STUPID. Promoting it is STUPID. Thinking "it wont happen to me" is STUPID. Reading these comments and thinking "chill out", "relax" is STUPID.

If not for your self, for your parents, your brother and your sister and for the continued privelage to skate that you share with all of your closest friends..... Wear a fu#*ing helmet!

cheers for this dani, your a top bloke! yeah, i onyl used to use my helmet for like half the things i did, which is pree stupid. but now that i saw that happen ima gonna wear it to sleep. my mate is fine, he can do everythin but couldhav been so much worse, he has a dented skull, small fracture in his neck and a smooshed brain. he is fine, can walk but gets headaches easily, when we were in the hospital and he had his neck brace he told me to give him my helmet to wear while he was on the bed :) haha! he should be back riding within a couple of weeks :D

WEAR YOUR HELMETS EVERYONE! it might just fu*$ up your hair a bit... BIG DEAL! when your done, take it off and use gel or wax or somethinng! and theyre not that bad looking if you actually have a look at it on you before you buy it!
glad to see your mate is ok but he won't be riding in a couple of weeks
Great write up Dani.
Your right- it's not cool if you don't wear a helmet or the best protection for the sport you're doing. Stick the armour on!
It's not the speed that kills- it's the sudden stop at the end! If anyone saw the video of my son-Nick's crash at Bathurst, newtons playground end 09,(YouTube) you can see why a good helmet helps. In the junior event- Nick cut the line too fine going into the dipper and shot out wide just clipping the hay bales, The force at 70k's whipped his head down face planting the bale- splitting his new $500 helmet in 7 places (better than his head)! A helmet only has to work once in a bad crash- this one did it's job in this frontal crash- but not any helmet will save you from all crashes, buy wisely! Spend big on your head-it's the most important piece of equipment you have.
If you have a $10 head-wear a $10 helmet.!
The ASRA crew hardly need to delete them, if there's any content on here where someone's not wearing a helmet they get thoroughly abused anyway. But yeah, it's not a bad idea.
well lads, I only have a fullface atm and i wear it whenever i go DH. I'd wear a skull cap free riding if I had one! Im responsible for me and skate alone mostly! (not many longboarders in my town) hahahhaha even worse if i crash.... I will still cnr session without one but I know the risk I take! (I.e. I could die if I smack my head!). IS THE ADDED THRILL WORTH IT?........... NO..... cause thats what were after, the thrill.....

Biggest tip i can give is learn control. Always skate in control and avoid stupid situations, whatever you ride. Im from an era where helmets were uncool and have seen alot of needless head injurys. (some very close calls myself)

You can still die wearing a helmet! Ride in control!!!!!!!! and skate safe!
Oh and guff can vouch for this.... I have exploded a fullface helmet already, pitched toeside, mega head bongo at speed.... Id be dead if i wasnt wearing my helmet then.... They do save lives!

Ive had to take mates to the hospital after the first run a few times (broken ankles and arms).... super session killer.....
I promote wearing helmets for sure!

In the end it is your choice! Choose to skate safe! Helmets r a safeguard for your head! skin grows back and bones heal but HEAD INJURIES R FOR LIFE!

TAKE CARE AND HAVE FUN
Well said B-rad!

I think one thing that is overlooked on this subject is PR though. Doing something as simple as wearing a skid lid makes a big diference to the way people view you especially the media.
i'm not so sure about this, the abuse bit pisses me off. sure helmets are a really good idea and do provide protection but i reckon we should encourage people to wear them rather then be a dick about it.
asra used to be a positive place, now all i'm picking up is bitching and criticism.

part of the stoke you get from skating is hanging with your crew and meeting new people, someone is way more likely to start wearing a hemet if you meet up with them and skate with them.
i don't think a bunch of dudes jumping on the bandwagon and slamming someone for not wearing a helmet is gonna change there behavior, all it does is make you look like close minded douche bags.

SPREAD THE STOKE!!! don't discourage little riders!

peace

I don't mind a bit of blood like the next bloke but it ain't nice checkin for pulses the only ones that are sort of ok are the older people because you say to yourself they had a good life. But when you see someone young pass away it is fucking tragic and stays with you for a long time. If kids don't want to wear helmets skate somewhere isolated so if you come off some poor bastard doesn't have to relive it for the rest of his life.....I am gonna go hit my punching bag now...
yeah just wear it aye. nuff said

well if it doesn't change their minds about wearing a helmet, at least next time they will reconsider posting up pics of themselves without them.
as we all know, peer pressure is the best way to sway someone in any direction whether its in person or online. whenever i make comments of pictures of kids not wearing their lids, the last thing i want to do is "spread the stoke". all i care about is swaying them in the direction of a helmet. stoke can't be spread when kids loose half their brain the next time they highside without a helmet on.
sorry mate, but you won't get through to them if you take the soft approach.
yea we all own a helmet.
when we're cruisin streets, who cares? if your not hitting over 10km/h, just ride safe.
if u do a hill we're a helmet, but when its 35 degrees riding a helmet on a flat is just dumb.
its like getting sunstroke in a beanbag.
ride safe where ever.
no abuse is needed on asra, its just purely dumb
Well said
