ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

Welcome to the launch of the perpetual ASRA Downhill Rankings. 2010 has seen an explosion of downhill races throughout Australia, so from this moment on we're going to start collating the results and officially ranking all downhill riders in Australia.

We will start the rankings from January 1, 2011, which means the winner of the first race next year will become the No. 1 ranked rider in Australia, at least for a little while. Subsequent races will be added, and once 12 months have passed we will start removing older results to ensure that only a rider's pervious 12 months results are included.

Which races are included?

There are four categories of races that will be included:

  1. IGSA World Cup in Australia - ie, Newton's Nation.
  2. IGSA/ASRA Australian Nationals - the IGSA limits these to one per year, and ASRA is currently in negotiations for an ASRA/IGSA Nationals in 2011.
  3. Australian Regionals - includes all legit (non-outlaw) downhill races in Australia
  4. Outlaws - the more people that attend your event, the more ranking points they are worth.

Only downhill races are included - no push races, carpark races, ditch races or slalom races.

Which people are included?

We'll collate rankings for:

I'm organising a race, and I want it to be included in the rankings. What do I do?

Do these things:

  1. Create a public event for your race on this website at least one month in advance.
  2. Run the race. There must be a minimum of 16 racers for skateboard races and 8 for luge races.
  3. Within one week of the end of the race, post the results on the Event page, along with a Podium Picture, and a short report on the event.
    The results must include:
  • Racer's first name (no nicknames!)
  • Racer's last name (no nicknames!)
  • Racer's date of birth
  • Racer's place in race.

4 Send the results to asra@skateboardracing.org.au

We encourage you to use the results spreadsheet when you send us your results.

Note: ASRA reserve the right to exclude a race for any reason. Significant doubts over the credibility/fairness of the results would necessitate excluding a race.

Grits I'm not sure what you mean by " ASRA have always said they cannot help you organise an event". Helping with events is all we ever do. What we can't do is be the chief organiser for every event in the country. People need their own organinsing teams for that. What we can do is arrange rego payment systems, provide intelligent formats and electronic scoring, provide insurance, give credibility to event proposals, provide some infrastructure, give you a website to promote your event to the widest possible audience and connect with almost all your potential competitors, and generally volunteer our time.

The thing I have experienced over many years of running skating events of all shapes and sizes is that every event is different, every council has a different process, every location has different requirements. Every event requires different funding and different lobbying styles. There are a few things that remain constant which are insurance, risk management and traffic management. These are all very simple bland things to arrange and can generally be tweaked from prior event documents. If anybody requires any of this for an upcoming event I am happy to help them out with some of ASRA's documentation

What ASRA doesn't have is any paid staff, so we are unable to spend every waking hour doing the grunt work for events all over the country, we still need to work normal jobs so we can spend the rest of our time running ASRA and pushing the sport

Grits, you have lots of experience in organising races the last few years. Do you think you could write a manual on organising a race for the ASRA community? It would be a huge contribution. Maybe a collaboration? You put something together and ASRA will expand it out, fill in the blanks. In that way it will get done faster.

Could you do that for the community?

Hop - these documents to help people organise an event have been on ASRA's priority list for over 2 years now

(http://www.skateboardracing.org.au/forum/topics/2144162:Topic:6955?...). I believe that GSE have this sort of stuff already available.

Perhaps ASRA could re-open negotiations with GSE? You know, for the community........

In regards to this series I still have a few more questions

* Other than questions over results, why is the clause to 'exclude a race for any reason' there? What scenarios does ASRA see that would justify exercising this clause? I mean, how can someone falsify results when there will be at least 7 other riders present.

* For my event to be included in the pointscore, do I have to use ASRA's insurance or can I use a different policy?

* What will happen if there is a clash of race dates? ie. two events in different states on the same day. Will both events be eligible for points provided they meet the criteria?

* Can we get some idea of time frames for the bigger legit events? It would greatly assist those of us who want to attend and have to organise family/work commitments etc

thanks

Nic, answers to your questions:

1) The "exclude a race for any reason" is just a catch-all. I don't expect the clause will ever be needed, but you never know. I haven't thought through all the possible reasons why a race might need to be excluded, and I don't plan to. I figure it won't happen. It's the same for falsifying results - I don't expect it will happen, but you never know and I figured I should put in a clause to cover it. It's no big deal.

2) No, you don't have to use ASRA's insurance.

3) If there is a clash of race dates then both races will be included.

4) Other legit events will happen when they happen. It's not in anybody's interests for dates to be announced later rather than sooner, so a lack of announced dates is simply because they're not known yet.

thanks Bugs.

Surely if ASRA is in negotiations for a sanctioned Australian championship there'd be a rough idea of when it would be on? I mean is it likely to clash with any of the overseas world cup rounds? I really hope more information on these legit events will be available in the near future.

Also, will outlaw luge races qualify for points with just 8 riders or would other disciplines have to be included as well?

There's no requirement for race organisers to include any particular disciplines.

Am i the only one who can see the potential dangers in encouraging kids to have outlaw races. ASRA should be discouraging them and supporting legitimate events.

the sport is full of potential dangers, but so is driving to the shops..

dont see anyone encouraging kids to do anything.

i think the sport is regulating itself in this regard,.the event has to be announced on asra a month before its on.

if some kids were to announce an outlaw on a dangerous rd without nessecary precautions in place,i think they would be advised otherwise....i dont think we are all that stupid,

this is why the outlaws we do have are held in reasonably safe places, were there is no traffic and the hills are easy as.....eg.pump station,hillclimb.etc..ive been lookin for just the right spot to hold an outlaw for ages, but it is nearly impossible to find....we could just say fuk it and hold an outlaw at mt kiera or the dozens of other places that are nearly suitable, but why havnt we?coz its called common sense,

would asra exclude a race if it was ridiculously dangerous and on an unsuitable road?and discourage it?

i know its members would, you cant even post a pic without a helmet on without people giving you there thoughts....

just a bit sik of the handful of negative people on here, when 95% of the community is positive and stoked on it all....

So ASRA decides if I can hold my outlaw ????  are they the sanctioning body for outlaws? That is not very outlaw......

im not speaking for asra,i was talking about common sense prevailing.

no one can stop you from holding your outlaw except the police..but i was assuming that asra could refuse to include it into the points if they were concerned about being associated with a race of such danger and stupidity,.there has got to be a line somwhere....

it was my come back to you and your statement guff,...dont think anyones obligated to answer anyones nit picking,..i just did,coz i felt like it.......
