ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

Welcome to the launch of the perpetual ASRA Downhill Rankings. 2010 has seen an explosion of downhill races throughout Australia, so from this moment on we're going to start collating the results and officially ranking all downhill riders in Australia.

We will start the rankings from January 1, 2011, which means the winner of the first race next year will become the No. 1 ranked rider in Australia, at least for a little while. Subsequent races will be added, and once 12 months have passed we will start removing older results to ensure that only a rider's pervious 12 months results are included.

Which races are included?

There are four categories of races that will be included:

  1. IGSA World Cup in Australia - ie, Newton's Nation.
  2. IGSA/ASRA Australian Nationals - the IGSA limits these to one per year, and ASRA is currently in negotiations for an ASRA/IGSA Nationals in 2011.
  3. Australian Regionals - includes all legit (non-outlaw) downhill races in Australia
  4. Outlaws - the more people that attend your event, the more ranking points they are worth.

Only downhill races are included - no push races, carpark races, ditch races or slalom races.

Which people are included?

We'll collate rankings for:

I'm organising a race, and I want it to be included in the rankings. What do I do?

Do these things:

  1. Create a public event for your race on this website at least one month in advance.
  2. Run the race. There must be a minimum of 16 racers for skateboard races and 8 for luge races.
  3. Within one week of the end of the race, post the results on the Event page, along with a Podium Picture, and a short report on the event.
    The results must include:
  • Racer's first name (no nicknames!)
  • Racer's last name (no nicknames!)
  • Racer's date of birth
  • Racer's place in race.

4 Send the results to asra@skateboardracing.org.au

We encourage you to use the results spreadsheet when you send us your results.

Note: ASRA reserve the right to exclude a race for any reason. Significant doubts over the credibility/fairness of the results would necessitate excluding a race.

So you are saying that ASRA are going to run a race other than Newtons in 2011 that is legit?

Yeah Phil, maybe 2 others. But the issue here is about encouraging other races and capturing all the results.

Great News! Other than credibility/fairness of the results is there anything in particular that would result in a race being excluded from the results?

I am just thinking, if there are 20 outlaw races in NSW a rider in perth would be severely disadvantaged as it would be difficult for them to get at least 16 riders to as many of their own races as rider numbers are much lower, therefore they would have to fork out alot of cash to attend races in states that easily get the numbers increasing their ability to hold more races meaning they would never have to venture far. Therefore using this theory the winners will either be from NSW or QLD

Its hard to exactly predict how this would turn out. The theory is to encourage riders in any part of the country to put on races be that large or small in their area and be able to gather points regardless of travel which lets the younger riders participate in the rankings. Like in any of these things the more you travel the more you are rewarded. At this stage most big events tend to be held on the eastern side so riders from Perth tend to be disadvantaged by distance but thats generally the deal for them with everything (the nature of living in Perth). hopefully it means some crew over there put on as many small events as possible and if you throw enough seeds a few larger events pop up.

Just to recap, I posted a question in regards to the theory of having a "genuine" race.

Bugs said:

"But you have to announce the race (in the Events section) a month in advance, and have a genuine race"

What are the rules that makes a race "genuine"? Is there a list, or some guidelines to help those in the community who want to organise an event so we know it will be considered genuine?

I know that ASRA once said they would release a guide to help riders stage an event as they have always said that they cannot help you organise an event.

Will this guide now come to life and include the guidelines so that the events can be considered, as bugs said, genuine?

I think the spirit of the "geniune" is not to exclude but to make sure the race's purpose is not just to grab points. In Sydney, kids are bombing hills and neighbourhoods everyday. They could call one a race - the Killara Open, here are the winners - we all deserve points. ;-)

Grits said : as they (ASRA) have always said that they cannot help you organise an event.

I dont know of any situation where ASRA has said they will not help. Ado - has ASRA ever refused to help in a Townsville race or freeride?

ASRA is run by volunteers, their time is limited. They can not take the initiative and start an event in every town and region of Australia. However if someone wants to head up and take responsibility for organising a race, the full support of ASRA will be there if they need it. That could include private companies. That support includes ASRA committee, ASRA website, ASRA volunteers and ASRA membership. ASRA has insurance, and access to funding.

"Genuine" was used simply to mean "not a sham". I don't think it needs more definition than that at this stage. If in the unlikely event that people start creating sham/bogus races to fluff up their rankings points and game the system then we'll have to start laying down some stricter rules, but I think it makes more sense at the moment to simply trust the people in the community to Do the Right Thing.

As for a guide on Creating/Staging an Event, it's been on the To Do list for a long time, and always gets bumped down the list by other things. Thanks for giving us a kick along on it.
