ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

g'day guys...as of last night we were given the go ahead to promote it....sorry its so short notice but now we know its on!

the worlds first (we've been digging and cant find another...) down hill skateboard drift event...

think, car drifting (touge) meets slalom and sliding.  yep, through gates- down a hill, you and a competitor will run 2 runs a heat once chasing then leading to decide who's bringing the heat.

then the winner will move onto the next round...and continue until there is only one....

April 17th.
Baskerville raceway, using the 10-12% slope side.
scrutineering kicks off at 8.00 am
$5 entry.

the 18th will be a skate mission day for anyone who comes down where we will get you guys out to some of the sweet hills around hobart etc and then off to the pub!

also, if needed...i'm sure couches can be found...bring ya boards and ya' gear and ya' drinking boots.

DriftRules.docx
attached is the current thinking on the structure and rules- if anyone has any suggestions/questions let us know.  HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL HERE AND SLIDEWAYS!

i like the whole idea of a drift race but i dunno man it just doesnt make sense to me, you cant really keep 'drifting' through a turn and be able to hold a line... the whole point of drifting is to slow down into a corner. You can chuck a speed check into a corner and take a smoother line but usualy when you drift you kinda just scrub out... if you intend to drift through the entire corner i think you will scrub out too much speed... think of car drifting, they are able to keep the car sideways and power through the turns because they have acceleration from the back wheels to keep the momentum going. If you want your board to be able to turn and keep the wheels spinning you need to be holding a line, not drifting.
i dont mean to shut you down here im just finding it hard to see how you can race a drift race in the style you are intending, im thinking of the F1Drift action you see on fuel tv and longboards just arent able to do that...
also what sort of hill will this be run on? will it be a straight hill with gates set up? or will it be a downhill run with turns and gates? coz if its a full on downhill run with turn, then hold a normal race! if its a straight hill with gates then it becomes more of a 'carving, sliding slalom' and you will not be able to get the desired effect of a 'drift race'
yeah, can you post pics/vids of hill/ concept?
sounds good,
I owe Bobby a pair of wet socks in his car overnight! ,)
You could hold a drift race at Buderim if thats what you would call it. Because you can continue to drift right through the corners without loosing to much speed. We had a muck around there one day when Myself,Merrick and ash all went down together and once you see there hand go down to check you check as well and try and keep right on there butt, I'm thinking it would be impossible to judge though on style...........Just have who can get done the hill the quickest drifting through the gates instead of having two people at once and judging on style of how close you can get. And then you can hold a slide comp as well!
Hey guys, just adding some info/replying to concerns etc.

Yes, this is an odd concept, but it's something we've been -doing-, so it's not a complete experiment.

This is being held on a steep straight, and we'll recommend using coned, mid-to-hard duro', once-were-traction wheels. Or low-contact freeride wheels.
this way you get good speed out of the wheel, but it doesn't grip much, but they don't ice you off in a straight line either.

The gates will be about 1 meter from the edges of the road, then the same on the other side. ie huge offsets
We will have the gates far enough apart for any speed lost sliding to be re-gained before the next one
but not so far apart as to give you too-much of a breather between gates.

This won't be particularly fast, though the hill is steep enough that you can slide a fair way without it really slowing you down, especially when you're aiming to keep the board at 45*. This isn't going to be a pendy fest, if you do that you'll slow down too much, get way off line - and likely lose.
Looks like we're going to be able to put some stuff up for grabs!
this poster isn't done yet, (lacks logos and a bit of info) but here it is anyway! :)

Ahhh dam!!! Inbetween Jackos jam and BTB!!!!
on baskerville raceway? that hill isnt very steep at all... or long...
We're using the hill in reverse to the usual CAMS direction. It's significantly steeper than the section raced previously.
That said, we've piggybacked this onto a billy-cart event, it's not the perfect hill, but it's an opportunity to hold something legal without working our asses off - and we're not about to pass it up.

Jacko, it's pretty clear you don't like the concept, so don't come, shrug.
well if its a billy-cart event then i DEFIANTLY am unkeen
its there insurance, we got to run our own thing off their nickel....whatever jackson- have a good one.
