Iv recently bought some Abec11 Flywheels and im lovin them, but i hav noticed a lack of them in the pro racing scene of late and i was wonderin why(on that note cored wheels in general).Seems to be either Retros or Orangatangs, and me having used neither was wonderin wats all the fuss about.Iv herd rumours about both e.g.Orangatangs wear out in about 2 days.
So i guess wat im askin is,wats good for racing dh on and why?....i no its probs just personal prefference, but it never hurts to ask

sayshun plasmas are pretty good when they are new... they are allmost like a zig/tang hybrid... lotsa grip and a real smooth slide
well you dont see too much of them cause the dont have as much grip railing corners as zigs or tangs but they are faster so just depends on what hill you r ridding...there were heaps of guys running them at the gravyard call last year cause there was alot of slidding and speedchecking on that track...the tangs were rad there too but yeah they wear out pretty quick and you can smash a set in 1 run...such a smooth slide though just gotta sponoed or rich to race em...zigs are one of the most durrable wheels out there steve has been slidding a set for months and they still going they dont slide as smooth straight out of the box but they grip back in realy well...but hey you can take the edge of those in one run aswell so it all depends on how you ride em and what track....
yeah sweet,i want to start racin this yr,iv basically got most of the gear i need(leathers are pricks to find wen ur 6'6') and thats why i was curious about wheels, yeah there not cheap, but it seems pay to hav a little variety in wheels to cover most sitcho's.im based in melbs with my bro, where hill choice is limited but we're near coffs at the moment and theres hills everywhere of all diferent caliber. Was gonna hit Dorrigo but the weather has proved to be shit and the waterfalls are washin over the road, its been a while since i was last there but the road quality has seemed to improve quite a bit,how did u guys find it...didnt look to hectic in ur vid

first thing your gonna need if you wanna race this year is a plane ticket... just get a few sets of everything and try em out. different terrains and different style of race tracks call for different wheels, and there is no way to tell which sets of wheels work for YOU untill you try them, and then try them on different roads. I always use purple 4pres when im riding my local hills and stocked up heaps for europe last year then when i got there realized my hills have grippy roads and the purps were like riding on ice! its all comes down to experience so at your entry level just get whatever and try em all out.

And what sort of 'lack in the racing scene' have you noticed about the flywheels? is that coz you didnt see them on youtube or something? lots of people use them and i think they are a fantastic wheel, only reason why i wouldnt ride them is coz im sponsored by another company. you will be ineterested in the things people are actually riding on when you start to hit the races, and your views on equipment will change dramatically, people are being brought up in a silverfish environment when it comes to skating gear
the lack was in reference to wat the pros ride, yeah i really need to get out there and hit different hills,on that note im seriously considerin movin back up to the mid-north coast, cause there is really fuk all hill in vic let alone melbs, while up here ur've got the dividin range with a endless choice of hills and it seems to b where most people that race are based, dont get me wrong there is quite a scene in sydney, but no offence i hate the place, but im keen to come and check it out for both the hills and the riders.Yeah the flywheels are awsome, but my previous wheels were offset cored force wheels and within a couple of wks of freeridin i had cracks in three of them and eventual blowout of a core(im 6'6' and roughly 100kg)i no force isnt the same standard as abec11,but i was thinkin is this a common flaw with cored wheels or just cause im a big cunt.Iv also got some Gravity Hi-Grads on order and im keen to test 'em out,but like u said iv just gotta try em all and see wat i like, that and expand my experience

yeah ellery nice to see your keen to race im not sure what level of ridding your at but the only advise i can give to you is to be ready...remember this is a pro world cup circut and ive seen so many guys spend thousads of dollars to head over when they aint ready and dont even qualify..get up to sydney and ride with the fast guys there, see where your at or even head up here to the goldie..you have australia's best downhill skaters on the east coast of oz just a drive or short plane ride away..
or if your just up for a rad adventure ridding the hairpins of europe then grab a ticket and head over mate...
ohh and martin has won 3 world titlles and last years euro champs on flywheels plus endless other victories so we know they are a sick wheel...goodluck
cheers guys for ur responses, yeah thats my aim for the yr,just gain experience off hills and other riders and to go to newtons(just to check it out,not to compete for the podium)a few of the guys i ride with in melbs went to newtons last yr yr,most notably ching, who even got a write up on asra.iv only really got into dh in the last 6-8months,but hav a background of skatin, surfin and snowboardin and i feel right at home goin downhill and since obtaining the right kinda gear e.g. my demonseed(which is awsome),slide glove, full face helmet, etc. iv improved substantionally from wen i first bombed a hill and now i feel like i can get out there and start bombin some serious shit.Like i said im seriously gonna move to the east coast and hopefully start skatin with the likes of u guys(watchin u guys on here and youtube, gave me and my bro a good insight on wat we need to do and buy,to seriously bomb hills). The guys we ride with in melbs are awsome and we are yet to go to there secrete spots that they bomb, but there is to few and the scene is rather small.thanks again and feel free to leave any hints and tips to help me and my bro on our way to becoming a competitive racers

if the scene is too small and few why are there secret spots? doesnt seem fair to me... remember victoria is home to Australian's alpine terrain...
yeah we're goin up to hothom in feb to play at a music festival, and we're gonna check out a few of the runs up there, but compared to nsw and qld with the range followin the coast for 100s and 100s of ks with wat seems to be an endless choice of resonable to good quality roads basically in ur backyard, there is a lot more. There are some pretty good riders in vic and they hav helped us and shown us alot along the way,but the more the better i say and in melbs that just aint happenin.they hav secrete spots because they dont want them to get to over populated and the PD step in and stop them,im sure ur've probs experienced that, but anyone who rides with them is more then welcome to join....i said secrete spot because if i said the name of the places i might get in to trouble off them...they are after all their spots first

i think thats kinda sad, they obviously have a small crew and are always trying to 'push and expand' the scene, but how do you do that if you dont let people come skate your hills? we always encourage new people to come skate, chances of hills getting 'overcrowded' are slim to none, that only happens when you have people skaing them nearly EVERY weekend and causing trouble and riding all over the place... smack em in the head and say oi lemme come skate you pricks show me the gnarliest hills you got i wanna be a downhill racer you guys are gay for not sharing
haha its not like that, but i c where ur comin from. They're more than willing for new people to come and ride it with them(provided they hav the right gear),they're always lookin for new people, thats how we started skatin with them.i no of the locations but yet to skate them(only recently got a full face)but like i said i dont want to get into trouble off them from mentioning the names on here.I think they hav had trouble with the cops b4,so they're tryin to keep it low key,but yeah i no wat ur sayin
