Sports get $25m to curb binge drinking

TWELVE sports associations will become teetotal when it comes to alcohol
sponsorship after a $25 million deal with the government.

The groups
have struck a deal to promote safe alcohol consumption by adults, alcohol-free
sporting environments for minors and to reduce alcohol promotion in their codes.

But the AFL and NRL were not part of the deal. Those that do have a
stake include national associations for soccer, basketball, netball, swimming,
cycling, hockey, athletics, skateboarding, volleyball, equestrian,
triathlon and canoeing. They will be precluded from sponsorship that promotes
alcohol consumption as it would be in conflict with the health campaign message
of Be the Influence, Tackling Binge Drinking.

In return for sponsorship money, they will promote the
safe drinking message through advertising, uniform branding, sports ambassadors
and communication with players, their families and spectators.

The Federal Minister for Sports, Kate Lundy, announced the deal yesterday as part of
the National Binge Drinking Strategy. The National Drug Strategy Household
Survey report in 2010 found that one in five 16-17 year olds drank at risky
levels at least every month.

Ms Lundy said clubs and sporting
associations would still be able to serve alcohol, but the sports would promote
the ''Be the Influence'' message to inspire young people to reduce their
dangerous drinking levels.

''By opting in, they are going a step further
to influence in a positive way young people to be part of a healthy lifestyle,''
Ms Lundy said.

The president of the Australian Medical Association, Dr
Steve Hambleton, supported the strategy.

''Young people, in particular,
are easy targets of alcohol promotion at sporting and cultural events that
portrays drinking as part of a healthy lifestyle,'' he said.

A spokesman
for the AFL, Patrick Keane, said it already had strong messages of responsible
use of alcohol, gambling and racial tolerance.

The AFL came under fire
this week for brokering a 10-year contract with Carlton United Breweries. Under
the deal, a player substituted onto the ground during the game would be known as
a Carlton Draught substitute.

Dani,
that money has some strings attached.....
let me introduce you to the board controlling "our" sport...

I'll talk to skate sa.

yeah you'll never get anything from skate aus or sba,
go the opposite route and get alcohol sponsors to curb strict anti-drinking laws

I'm with you Trav... I just checked out the skateboarding australia site and not a helmet in site, what a joke for the so-called governing body

Trav's right, if you want to tap that pool of cash, you will need to swap the helmet for NikeSB's and have a rail sliding, ollie popping event, and lie about your age...you are still 14 right??? cause that is only kind of skating that (SA's event company) SbA appears to promote

.....oops forgot, they also have something for all you longboarders.
After some extensive market research by either ASC or SA (probably involving the HOON crew and a slab of cans), they are advised that longboarding is most relevent to young females.
(thats right maidens of steeze - you can start gloating now!)

STREETWISE 'CRUISER GIRL' LONGBOARDING SESSIONS
Skateboarding originated from surfing, basically street surfing when the surf was flat. Nowdays, the Cruiser board is enjoyed by all ages, male or female. Its easy, low risk, and its feels great. The combination of soft wheels and long wheelbase allow you glide along visually beautiful landscape with little to no effort, soaking up the scenery. So come on girls, pop the below dates in your calendar and come cruise with us. All session start at 9am

ASRA have got this longboarding thing completely wrong!
The fun times, are really with the SbA"cruiser girls"

OMG How totally totally cool is that......

Seriuosly Matty You will be far better off talking to Coopers!
Send me a pm with your phone number, and I can fill you in on the "fruitful negotiations" between SA & SV, and SbA & VSA.

we wont get anything, but downhill has less of an issue with alcohol then the rest of the skate community. The money is there to fix the issue of binge drinking in sport. Skateboarding has an issue with binge drinking our section of that sport does not have an issue as big
