ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

This might interest someone enough to do it..

The idea is a 'Classic' Race. Like in motor sport you have classic car races, well how about a 'Classic' skateboard race. Obviously not everyone can get hold of a genuine vintage set up. But heres some guidelines for building something up that would pass as a 'classic early to mid 80s style' set up.

Deck= wood only, no composites. No dropthrough, do drop down,etc- Topmount only. No restrictions on size.

Trucks= CAST standard type only, (ie indys, bennet, tracker etc) no RKP, or CNC trucks allowed. trucks must use urethane bushings. No restrictions on hanger width, no single action trucks allowed.

Wheels= Max diameter 70mm, radiused wheels only. No square edged wheels allowed. In keeping with the theme, high rebound formulas such as Otang, Reflex, BlackOps, Psychathane etc are not allowed. standard urethane formulas only.

Thats about it, set up a board like that and you have something close to what speedboarders were using back in the day. It makes for very cool racing cos everyone is riding pretty much the same board, yet without the standard modern saftey net of wide grippy wheels, speed trucks, and various other things.
If you wanted to you could impose restrictions on deck size. max width 9inch max length 36 inch or what ever. You could also do the same for trucks.

Theres been some races like that in England, its good fun. If you get one going here, document it! doesnt have to be all official and shit, but you could charge an entry fee and winner takes all, or dontate the entry fees to the charity of the winners choosing. anyway, just a suggestion.

i think like a gravity games styled race would be cool a lot of guys on here can relate to seeing those events growing up and the gear is still easy to come by to run OG or close to it, would also let some guys run their current downhill decks

i got some vintage boards from the 60's at my place

That would be interesting.  Sounds like some fun!

this would be sweet as.

And wood must have come from box that once held apples or oranges, or stolen from a paling fence.

1950s race.

max board width 4"

wheels must be made of clay or steel

all hardware must come from a roller skate.

Back in the day...ere we go [insert rolling eyes thingy]....we raced things like Webbcraft GT's and Condors.

Think Penny with a narrow solid oak, or plastic deck.

By the 80's it was all wide decks for transition, vert, and tricks...(he he he young kids those days.)

The 1970's is the era you want, when actual racing happened more than 80's aerial work, and when 70mph was first reached, at places like signal hill.  Speed boarders, and skate car racers also had trucks called Strokers. (see the retro group).

Those that show up at Fawkner park slalom race on Nov 13th should be able to see some vintage race gear, and might even get a ride on one.

thats one thing that makes me thing gravity games era racing would be ideal, have you seen the price on a set of stokers lately? thats if you can find one

The Gravity Games era was Indy trucks or Z-Rollers and 70mm Krypto's, Sean.

In the early '70's I used to have a red plastic Condor deck, Chicago trucks with the wide clear urethane wheels...for ditch's or cruising.

yeah sacks thats what i mean, like my downhill setup at the moment is a ew mystery model (soon to be a a dregs alpine or something like that) with indys any wheel from kriptos to big zigs
