ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

So i need new knee pads, the protec street pads don't seem to hold up to falling and scraping too well, and they slip down to the shins anyway well i fall. So i'm wondering if the protec park pads are any better? They're low profile and have replaceable caps, anyone tried them before for dh?

Or will i save money in the long run by buying 187 pro pads? I'm only hesitating cause they're quite expensive.

Also i'm looking to get a good knee gasket, cause my girlfriend has this thing where her patella can 'pop' out of position if she falls awkwardly hard enough, so i want something that will be able to keep her knee caps in its natural position well even during a fall. Anyone got any suggestions where i can find them?

Sorry for the long post. I just like to over research things before buying them.

Cheers

Go straight to 187 you won't regret it
I haven't used the 187's but have used the park pads and have found them to be okay, BUT what I have found is after about 6 months wear the whole first layer elastic strapping tends to disintergrate....could be my super hero sweat but unfortunately I doubt it...... As for the girlie the best thing you guys can do is find a decent experienced sports trainer, try your local footy club, and ask them (with a 6 pack in hand) to show you how to strap the knee. The advantages of this is the strapping can be adjusted to how the knee is on the day, we occasionally hold fluid around the popliteal (back of the knee) due to lymphatics (much too much info) but the best bet is learning to strap it; you will get a better support.
I am a European and Australian Qualified Sports Therapist and Sports Medicine Australia Sports Trainer, so know from where I'm coming. Just for those that have been strapped badly in the past, it is possible to strap for functionality (flexibility) and at the same time for stability.
I should mention that she does dh as well, so i'm trying to find the best support for the knee. But i will take your advice Aych and look up on how to strap the knee up.

i think i can assume that most of you guys will recommend the 187 like robbo, looks like i might be forking out that extra money for the 187.
Hi Gilbert,
Knee pads,
Either Primates hand made by John McGrath, (e) primate@lexicon.net
or
Pro Desinged hand made by Wild Bill contact

thanks wayne, but i heard primates are really expensive, pro design even more. i might just go with the 187.

Those are both big cushiony pads that are great for kneesliding on transitions, but in longboarding you don't hit the ground so hard or so often. Something smaller, lighter and sleeker makes more sense to me, and the "staying in place" aspect is even more important because asphalt grips your pads more than concrete does.
hey
the ones that arent right for you, if u willing to sell em, contact me...thread on here:

cheers!!
yeah well i'm thinking a really good set like the 187's might save me money in the long run anyway, am i right to assume this? but you got me second guessing myself kooky, if the park pads are usable then i'd save a fair bit. decisions, decisions. i'm never good at this.

and sorry manjot, my current knee pads aren't usable anymore.
Hey Gil,
Don't know how big you are, but keep size as a consideration as well. I've got Protec's which work well enough for my purposes, only really using them to practice sliding, and not as major fall protection.

Big problem i have is they are the largest I could find in a local store, I think their XL. Anyway the lower strap only just makes it around my calf and the Velcro only has about 1cm grab. Can make them uncomfortable, but more importantly means I don't have full faith in their safety capabilities and i can only wear them with shorts, and they won't fit over anything long.
cheers chris, no worries i'm not that big a person, a medium sized pad should fit me perfectly. my main concern is if 187's are worth that money over protecs, in terms of protection and durability.

anyway thanks for all the input guys.
Hey dude 187's for sale on charlie dont skate $100...?
