ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

went in too skatebiz in brisbane today and it cost sooo much.

they had An old landyachtz bamboo mummy with randal 180's and abec 11 70mm wheels for $500 complete. and this one actually made my jaw drop, they had orangatang stimulus for $120

the only positive side to this trip is that compared to a year ago when the only longboards they stocked were z-flex and s9, skatebiz now sell, otangs, abec 11, landyachtz, paris trucks, randal trucks and a bunch of other longboard brands. good sign of growth i guess

gotta feed the kids bro haha
prices are low at voodoo tho!!!
doesnt have to feed a family ;)
yeah i think its cause of the cost of having a shop in the cbd. like for a coffee or food shop the mark up is obvious because people will pay more so they can have their lunch without going far from work but for a skate shop it just doesnt make sense.
we do get an awesome deal when we buy online.

I like the growth but feel that the mainstream skateshops tried all they could to squash and ridicule longboarding until the surf shops really made it accessible and un-ignorable. Now they are trying to smile about it and sell the stuff.

At least they have better brands than the surf shops now.
I think that when we see prices like this it makes us realise how fortunate we are to have people like Hopkin and Cre8ive Sk8 that have coverage to everywhere in Australia with more brands than most stores. This is as well as having some of the finest board makers, such as Steve, Adam and Pete, that produce some of the best boards and tweak them to how you like them without charging nearly as much as local surf and skate shops.
stuff that name and shame patrick it is skaterhq. they were selling jacko's used slalom setup for the same price as a new setup from hopkin a few months back. I live in wollongong and would rather travel the extra kms to st leonards where the staff actually ride longboards and have better prices and product knowledge. with all the extra profit skaterhq rake in you think they would have sponsor banners up at asra sanctioned comps.....

Those prices are not unusual they are just using the standard retail 100% markup which is what most shops need to survive. The prices you are getting at the moment are well below 100% markup. When you have a real bricks and mortar retail shop you have a lot of costs and taxes to cover along with your rent, wages, general bills, a mountain of free shipping costs, this list goes on.

But we all still get good prices on everything, not because the raw cost of any product has come down. Because we try to get as many people into the skating experience as we can and most people aren't prepared to pay a full retail price on anything. It means you have to keep margins tight and just aim for volume and try to spread the stoke as much as you can
As Robbo said, it is about true retail pricing rather than the heavily discounted pricing guys like Hopkins and Cre8ive have to do to sell the gear. If I had to survive on just longboard gear I'd have been broke years ago. It is the shoes, clothes and scooter gear that keeps the shop open so I can continue my passion for this sport. Don't be down on them they are just unaware of the lower margins that have to be made on this gear.
i wasnt so much being down on them as i was being happy about you guys, its great you guys have the passion to support the sport.
perth prices noted recently.... 625 for a vanguard. 210 for a set of flywheels!!!! JEBUS!!!
