In some cases, MTB pads are pretty good alternatives, especially for elbow gear. However, if you're knee-sliding out or taking slams in the bowl, then skate gear's just going to be better: you can recap the knees on skate pads and the elbow pads will take a bigger direct hit.
If you're shredding the sides of pads, I think it just means you need to either get pads that don't rotate on you, or better pads. The high-end TSG, 187 and others are worth the high entry cost, later on, as they last a lot longer.
