How to measure wheelbase correctly

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure its the distance from axle to axle with a set of 50* randal's on.

It measured inside truck holes to inside truck holes sorry Nick not axle to axle

Its measured this way so it can always be measured regardless of truck type

With anything I build, I always measure axle centre to axle centre, as front truck holes to front truck hole can give an inaccurate wheelbase measurement when various trucks are being used. Your wheelbase is the contact point of your wheels to the road, and even though your truck holes may be a constant, you change trucks and you'll also change the "actual" wheelbase measurement.

Almost all manufactured boards are measured inner holes to inner holes as this is the only way only publish a WB of a deck. Whether its the most accurate according to how you setup your board that will always change. If you are comparing it to another deck that has an advertised WB than measure yours the same that is inner hole to inner hole, Luge and buttboard may be different as most of them are custom made so do not have to advertise measurements that are consistent but in skateboard this is the standard way

wouldn't that mean you'd get different measurements if using old and new school bolt patterns?!

Personally I think instead of wheelbase, it should be 'hole base' measured from inner mounting hole to inner mounting hole.

the standard way to measure is inner holes to inner holes, all manufactures use this as 'standard' for measuring wheel base otherwise they would have to list a whole bunch of options such as:

WB with randals and 50* plates - XX"
WB with randals and 42* plates - XX"
WB with grizzleys with X plates - XX"
WB with X trucks and X plates - XX"

and so on.... so if you are looking for a 'standard' then it is inner holes to inner holes, weather it is drilled for new skool or old skool, thats how it is.

Thats just the way its done in all skateboarding old school new school makes no difference its just inner holes. Board makers make boards not trucks

thats right. It does not matter if its old school or new school because they both use the same inner holes, only outer holes differ. Axle to axle can differ with type of truck deggree baseplate etc , inner holes are always the same

Im not questioning the 'standard' method manufacturers use, just its accuracy in correctly determining the wheelbase on a complete board. Measuring inner holes is an easy method to compare different decks but the point of this thread is to measure wheelbase correctly (accurately)

Like you said jacko, wheelbase will vary with different trucks - why not take the trucks into consideration by measuring from axle to axle?!

You don't take the trucks into consideration because they have never been taken into consideration before. He is asking where to drill his holes according to how a skateboards WB is measured and that is the proper advice he is being given. So while he may know what a deck with 28" WB feels like, when he drills holes for trucks it will make the deck feel like 26" when he meant it to feel like a normal 28". Skaters know the feel of a WB according to the normal standard it is the easiest way to do it and the easiest way to compare boards
