if the big zigs are what your attempting to slide thats probably half the problem, they are made to grip.

search youtube for gravity slide lessons with sergio yuppie, different setups but the motions are the same.
you probably need to break them in im guessing they're brand new?? don't worry it took me awhile before i could start sliding it takes alot of practice

I started learning to slide on lime big zigs (80a) and even after they are broken in well (lips are gone and are starting to cone), they grip too much for sliding.

Your best bet is to get some slide wheel like Abec 11 88a strikers or some of the new free ride wheels. I got some second hand 88a Strikers for sliding and it makes sliding a lot easier to perform as well as the slide lasting longer. The only down fall of the 88a Strikers, is that there a bit slower and the feel of the ride is shit compared to soft lime big zigs.
id say learn in the wet then apply it to the dry my first week of learning to slide i was grazed all over so be prepared for some pain you need to get over the fear factor and just try it
Push your back foot out. I learnt switch standup 180s the other day and its all about having control over your back leg.

Assuming you're putting your hand on the ground...
go faster,
turn sharper,
put your hand on the ground further away from your body,
put your hand further forward,
put more weight on your hand.

Some combination of all of those...

I spent some hours yesterday sliding Lime Big Zigs, and I have no great sliding skillz, so it's not really about the wheels.
Oh and also you can start with putting one hand back and one hand holding the rail of the board. It helps get your confidence up. Once your okay with the feeling of your hand on the ground you can start to let go of the board and use two hands back if its easier. Loose trucks also helps i find.
well standup with lime bigzigs will make it just that bit harder, especially when you're just learning, but with hands down slides i find you can slide almost anything if your trucks are loose enough.

just commit, whatever slide you do is all about commitment, technique wise you can search on youtube for some videos. and go faster!
get yourself a 36" double kicker and put on some Rainskates yellow jackets 98a or the 100a green ones...
get speed, put you hand on the ground, rotate at your shoulders and push your board down the hill... keep weight on your hands... presto you did a slide...
What is sliding today...? standups on a longboard or techincals spins on a short double kickers with hard wheels? Does anyone still slide like we used to?
Sliding can be done on anything, there are no restrictions to what you can use. Some setups will make it easier but do have boundaries in other areas...
My first slide setup was a Rayne Agent with tracker darts and yellow jackets... i slid on that thing for 3 years before even thinking about doing standup slides... let alone on a long board with soft wheels
thanks for all the comments and help guys...hopefully if some of you are in adelaide we can go longboarding coz aldgate is getting pretty shitty haha and hopefully ill be better at sliding..cheers again boys
