ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

Hey guys, for my year 12 physical education we gotta do an issue analysis. Mine is 'LONGBOARDERS NOT BEING ABLE TO USE PUBLIC ROADS' ! I need views from both sides of the arguement, as in stuff like safety, why cant we use those roads, where can we go instead, and what you guys already think of the laws already in place, why we cant use bike lanes, etc. (e.g not over 50km per hour, no skating at night, no laned roads). Anything you guys can think of can you please give ur opinion. I gotta write letters to the councils and police as well to get both sides of the arguement.

CHEERS LADS anything u can think of write it down!!!!!

p.s if theres enough of u guys that write ill be printing out the whole page and including it in my folio.

why dont skaters have the same rights as cyclist?. Simple, the road traffic authority dont care dont give a stuff ... stay off the road...problem solved.

If the rest of the World thought like that then maybe Id accept what the law comes up with. But it doesnt. The law in this country needs to get off its high horse and talk to the people.

In NewZealand skaters have the same rights as cyclist. But they must abide by the road rules..... u must use hand signals, u must not ride eratically ie weave from side to side, u must give way etc etc.

You got to ask urself what the hell is the difference between the two countries laws and the politicians that govern the people. Is 1 more understanding than the other?

One thing I do like about living in a country (Australia) with so many bloody restrictions is that its taught me to stand up against the law if I think it stinks, its given me that hunger, that edge, that enjoyment to go out and skate.Dont get me wrong I love skating when in NZ but it lacks that drive I experience when skating in Australia

A policeman once told me that the reason skateborading on the road will never become accepted or legal is becuase it required skill to do. He used the example of bikes saying that if a kid is in a car or walking down the road and see's a cyclist hurtling down the road and thinks ''that looks like fun I might try that'' chances are he will be fine because he knows how to use a bike and squeeze the brakes. If he see's one of us on a road and thinks it looks like fun then he is likely to die because he has no idea what he is doing. I thought it was an interesting point of view. There is really nothing that is used on the road today which requires any sort of ''skill''. Of course driving a car should require skill but very few people posses it. Motor bikes are another but braking and slowing down require no extra ordianry skill. THis is just road use, I am not talking about racing.

Another lady named Linda fellow who is the police comissioner or South Australia said something when questioned about Leigh, Bow and myself riding on the freeway which will stick in my mind for the rest of my life. ''We are concerned and upset that people would take their own lives into their own hands''. I think that one line sums it up perfectly.

Dani you got it in one! "take the power back" ref: Rage against the machine.
