ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

I'm sure this has been covered somewhere, just can't find it. Started riding in '76 on a poly super flyer slalom and have broken many boards and bones since. For the last 4 years been rolling around on a stateside 46" pintail from the UK just before my good lady imported me and a smoothstar (the smoothstar only 'cause it's funny) couple of weeks ago I found two "now you're gonna die at speed" stress fractures in the stateside so have retired it...Last time I rode slalom was firing around peds and the odd car I never saw in time so, what the hell this year all out for some GS comps, fun, the works.......the question is for around $400 - $500 price tag what set up could I get away with racing on? I've been out of the gear loop for so long I saw the PVD R3 front truck on the web and it looked like you'd need an engineer to set it up........my apologies if this has been done to death but I gotta know March is rushing towards us and the wife is packing me off to NSW for the meet....Aych

Im sure the boys at HOPKIN racing could set ya up a fine setup for what ya lookin for,Jacko [ozzy slalom champ]works there,if he cant steer ya in the right direction no,one can.
Put all your money into the trucks, get a Airflow back and Radikal front truck and attach to a cheap board. In time upgrade the deck.
I agree with what Robbo says.
Also, keep in mind that the race in March on the Central Coast will be quite tight slalom or tight/hybrid. You may wish to get a board with a few different wheelbases. Most guys ride one set up on every race we have. However, the GS up in Townsville may change that...
Nice one guys, a good lead and some food for thought, the whole different set up thing had occured to me and was rattling around in the back of the head so, cheers Haggy, that has pretty much sent me off down the right deck road.
My only addition to the above advice is re the Radikal for the front truck. It's expensive, so if you can't justify spending that much get a Bennett for the front truck.
a bennett for GS or SGS? i dunno dude thats twitch central... i'd much prefer a tracker rather than a bennett for a GS course. or even a Skandal or randal 125?
I just ran tracker 106 trucks on my GS board at Bathurst and cleared the course fine...
Bennetts are fine at GS speeds, no twitchier than Trackers. I discovered this when I rode Marcus' deck with Bennetts at the GS at Newtons - it felt fine, and that's when I decided to get rid of the Tracker RTX for ever. I've ridden a Bennett fast at the Pump Station too - no problem, and better than a Tracker.

I reckon Bennetts are the perfect entry-level slalom front truck.
after looking around and testing the water with a few of "Australia's biggest skate stores" with "the largest range" etc I found the best service and advice with the Hopkin guys.
Am now riding a conekiller giant slalom with a custom set up; well its kinda riding me til I get my head round the slalom thing.
A huge thanks to www.hopkin.com.au
