Well i just got my new hopshop newsletter. for those of you who subscribe you know what im probably going to ask, for those that dont subscribe you should its great

ok anyway
since i started learning hwo to slide i have been grabbing the board in the middle when doing heelsides, i have since learnt this is aclled grabbing stinkbug. i can kinda slide without doing this but definitely cant do a pendy without grabbing and cant do it at speed so much. anyway why is it so bad to do this? i mean if it makes me slide bettter isnt it a good thing?

it isnt a good thing. you can get uber wobbles while cornering and you can easily lose grip on the board.

Drop your back knee and try to lie it flat on the board, then grab in front of your back shin. it may feel uncomfortable, but it helps while sliding and cornering.

like this

It makes your arm smell like balls

and you become less aerodynamic, but mainly its the smell thats bad.....
There is one main reason why it is bad: it restricts the amount your shoulders can turn.
just like all board sports, skating's turning is lead in by your shoulders. If you stood square on with your board with your front shoulder (left shoulder if regular, right shoulder with goofy) pointing down the hill and your back shoulder (right shoulder if regular left shoulder if goofy) and started riding, then twisted your upper board so your front shoulder turns and points a bit to the left, you automatically turn left. Same goes if you twist your body inwards and point that front shoulder to the right, you automatically turn to the right.
Now to the stinkbug part....
If you squat on your board and have both feet FLAT on your board and grab inbetween your legs, you wont be able to twist your shoulders outwards (to the left if you are regular, right if your goofy, this is for heelside turns) as much as you would if you drop your back knee and roll your back foot onto the inside edge of your foot and grab outside of your legs. Doing this allows your upper body to twist and square your shoulders up more and allow you to lean further outwards and point your shoulders more in the direction you want to go. Grabbing stink bug restricts this, and also gives you shit style and you start stinkin up the place, hence the name: Stink bug

HOWEVER! there are exceptions. I have seen people grabbing stink bug and are still able to twist at their shoulders and still maintain the proper stance for turning. All you need to do is roll that back leg inwards and ride on the inside edge of your foot. It is still stinkbug and still kinda looks odd but at least it gets the job done. People who do this may as well grab around the leg but either way they arent looking like they are going to crash all the time.

Examples:

Stink-bug: (note that this is actually the only occasion when grabbing stinkbunk is awesome, coz its yate-dwag)

Good Style:

Style-bug:

my net is capped so that photo might take about a year to load but thanks.

ok thanks everyone and especially jacko that makes sense. i get what you mean about shoulders - i have been grabbing then when my shoulders couldnt turn i would pull around with my hand to help me do the pendulum. with stability i thoughr it helped but i guess im wrong. i will try to work out how to do it with my back leg lying on the board i guess. thanks for all the help.
You have to embrace the culture of longboarding. I love how this sport is evolving and new terms are coined, but there is always a story behind them. "Stink Bug" is one of my favourite expressions. Not until Newton's did I get the flavour, Bricin would wail when he saw a bug. In the expression session, there were purpose done stink bugs, stylin bugs, stink up the air bugs.
As Jack has pointed out, there is a reason why some skaters do the bug. And jackson's brilliant reply, shows not all is lost. If you are addicted to the bug, time for some steez therapy, try something new. Or capture it on video/photo and it could make the weekly Hopshop newsletter, our new section: "Stink Bug of the Week". Or if we run out of stink bugs, it might be steez of the week.
How to get the Hopshop newsletter?
Login and modify your profile (it is at the bottom of the page = subscribe to hopshop newsletter)
Or add your email address to the mailing list on the Hopkin front page - it is at the top in the red box.
I've always been a stinkbugger. Here I am stinkbuggin at the front of the virtual pack:

I'd like to think I was style-buggin rather than the the stinky Yates-style. Either way, I grabbed the deck right up near my front foot, which enabled me to turn my shoulders in the way that Jacko's very informative post mentions.

But at last week's Keira session I finally tried regular ol non-stinkbugging, and the light-bulb went on. It feels much better, much more stable, better in every way.

Drop your back knee and grab behind it. It feels SOLID.
i actually noticed you turn away from the dark side the other day bugz, wasnt sure if this was a new thing or not but either way it looked much better than before... however i must admit you were the first person i saw grabbing 'style-bug' and pull it off with ease...

bugs has been hauling lately..,the beauty of this sport is that you never stop improving,........they were style-bugs,....it was named after you......haha
i grabbed stinkbug a few wekks ago but my brother and his friends told me to stop and after a while it actually seems easier
thanks ill stop practicing that way. but how do i pendy without my arm? the way i pendy is by pulling it around with my arm and letting my legs follow.
yew my nemesis drop deck locks my foot in, so it feels like tits on a warm day. :) nice
hmmm jackos photos just loaded and im thinking i might kinda style bug. cause i end up much lower than the red suit guy and more like the bottom guy. Maybe thats just cause hes not got his hand down or something though.
