so how did other mags start
My advice is start with an eZine. I've spoken about this with mates before who're interested. The production cost is minimal and if people are serious about keeping a hard copy for themselves they can pay for printing costs themselves.

IGSA have just released their 2009 competition series zine. Loads of glossy pics etc. Articles and columns can be written out. We already have a stable customer base within ASRA's 300+ online membership base. Work it out with someone web build savvy and you can organise subscription. Email the zine out monthy, quarterly, whatever.

Minimize your risk of loss due to serious financial outlay, without skimping on picture quality.
Dont listen to them Reub give it a go champ these things have to start somewhere. I'm sure you would find alot support. give it a go and if at first you dont suceed try try again bro.
they tend to start with something small, like newsletters and even then it takes time and luck to reach a worldwide market.
seriously though dude, wake up. even Concrete Wave struggles to do well worldwide and thats the biggest longboarding magazine there is.
how much interest do you think there will be for this mag outside the ASRA community? its not viable to make a magazine specifically for Aussie longboarding, cos there is simply not enough interest in the sport.
the community we have is small and lets face it, there isn't even enough happening in OZ to make an issue's worth of content over 6 months, let alone 1 month.

but if you can prove me wrong, i'll be the first to buy your magazine "Longboarding Australia".
now an internet magazine i can see working.
i hear what you are all saying but what would happen if i try and get a big magazine company behind it. then they can help me sell it all over the world
if you can do that then do it, it would be great
i've been with concrete wave since around late 2002 ,believe me,you need deep pockets to take on a project like this,cw started just as a blog called skategeezer by michael brooke in the 90's , by luck it chanced & spawned into the very sparodically available international longboarder magazine [ look at the title of the mag it will give you a clue that this was not just a 'national' mag ]if you ever saw a copy it was hard pressed for material ,
early part of this decade concrete wave magazine was launched, & is still is growing ,our circulation now tops 150,000 copies world wide .
good luck in finding a'big company ' to fund such a bold project, you need major sponsorship that is prepared to run at a loss,in this economic climate you would be looking for the goose that lays the golden egg....
i cover alot of the events for australia in concrete wave ,i think you would be hard pressed to find content from the race comunity / longboard scene to be able to fill a full magazine regularly.
i don't want to shoot you down, please don't take it that way,i am just speaking from experience ok.
my experience comes from a global point of view working for a mag allround the world ,not just oz..

start a blog..it's cheap & easy & easily accessed via the web.
even we at concrete wave have started hosting the magazine so it can be viewed online without even having to go to the newsagent!...

yeah bro listen to,leigh. If there was gonna be a mag wholely devoted to longboarding it would be based in north america, where the majority of the events and riding population are. I don't want to discourage your effort cause i think there should be a publication like that.
