ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

Hello,

I've got a KS Rapier that I've been learning to use and last weekend I went down to the empty carpark to practice. I replaced the stock Randall II 180 bushings with Khiro 98a purples as that seemed to be the hardest available option from my forum trawling. My plans for the board are for just using it for cruising/commuting.

When I went down a mild hill (1-1.5 m drop over about 15m) I noticed the board feeling loose/wobbly underneath me. I wasn't exactly going fast (probably a running pace) but it was the fastest I've been on the board so far. I weigh about 140 kg so using the formula (your weight(lbs)/10 + 70 = the ideal duro) I would have something like 103a bushings but those don't exist to my knowledge.

I was wondering if the Khiro bushings may still be too soft at speed for me and if so what are my options? Or is it more likely it's just n00b/lack of experience? Or do I just need to tighten down more on them to get more stability?

I've seen doh dohs 100a bushings for sale but I've also seen numerous comments calling them "doh donts" but that seems to be the hardest (rated) ones around.

tl:dr - Any harder bushings than Khiro 98a for a fat bastard or just crank it down till it bulges at the sides?

try the grey venom eliminators. i think they're 98a but the shape makes them harder and the formula they pour those bushings in seems to be harder. also you might want to tighten your trucks with a spanner or something like that

Hi Fiend,

I've been sittin on the wrong side of 100kg for too long now, what i've found to be the major issue with bushings

in the harder range is the balance btween hard but still havinn rebound.

I think soft khiros are ok, hard ones crap.

JimZ black, altho softer 85a, compensate by havin more rubber on the road so still rebound, i have them on

slalom rear trucks.

On Sabre's i have green sabre barrels boardside and light orange refflex tall cones road side.

On other rII's i have red reflex's, barrels and tall cones.

Dont matter what you choose but you still want the busshin to "work" as it should, not cranked down to a pancake.

Wayne.

Practice a bit more. That wobbly feeling may be due to the fact that the muscles in your legs have not developed.+1 to first comment I'm sure double elims would provide more rebound for your weight. Though you should note that randals have a lot of play in the bushing seat! The bushings need to be tightened down- unlike trucks like paris, calibre, sabres, the randal bushing seat isn't very deep.

khiro bushings are kinda gooey and dont bounce you back thru a turn. and they are short. i agree with phill and hugh, grab some elims

It's inexperience, not the bushings. Here's how wobbles happen: Fear causes you to shift your weight back due to an unconscious desire to "not go so fast down the hill", and the rearward weight shift causes the wobbles, which causes more fear, and suddenly you're in a nasty feedback loop.

You need to break that feedback loop, which is easy enough - shift your weight on to your front foot, and get your head and shoulders forward and WANTING to go down the hill instead of hedging your bets and hanging back at the rear of the board. It all becomes smooth, easy and confidence-inspiring, and you find yourself in a positive feedback loop of wanting to go faster all the time.

Hey man, i weight about the same as you and i've got some elims, i wouldn't go any higher than the white shr 95a elim, just because the grey one is much too hard for every day riding and limits turning quite abit.

What Bugs said (pretty well explained actually!).

The deckside bushing carries your weight, and can be a bit harder, but if it is rock hard, more of the shocks and deflections in truck angle caused by uneven road surface will transfer straight to the deck, than you really want.....setting up the dreaded feed back loop.

It is like the difference between riding a solid framed BMX bike compared to a fully sprung mountain bike over rough ground.

Remember washers under your bushings will affect how the bushing reacts too. Then get out and skate and built up that ankle strength.

Thanks for all the assistance everyone. I'd already ordered the 98a elims before Eric's post but I'll have a play around with the 3 bushing sets I have (Khiro double barrel 95a Black and 98a Purple along with the 98a grey Venom SHR elims) and see what feels best.

Regarding the washers I assume any standard flat washer that is the same-ish diameter as the bushing should be fine or would the extra rebound cup washers provide be better for me?
