I've noticed with a few sets of trucks now that the response can be different turning left and right. so you get the front truck turning hard going left and the back turns hard going right (or viceversa).  In bad cases its pretty easy to see just by standing in the board. A badly drilled kingpin hole is the fault i've seen but there may be others.

is there a good way to check for this (even when its subtle), and are there any simple fixes?

What trucks have badly drilled kingpins?

What might look like bad drilled may not count. It may be drilled out on the casting but usually they line up with the deckbolt holes. This is how they're setup on the machine when they're manufactured.

It may be a simple case of your heelside being stronger than your toeside turns because of your weight shift.

It really shouldn't be a problem. Even with cheap trucks you just need to adjust to suit when your riding.
