Try going for a drive up to Copperlode Dam (Lake Morris) just outside of Cairns - traveling towards Freshwater / Redlynch. Let me know how that looks for downhill.
As a kid I used to ride the hills around Whitfield. That was a long time ago now. There should be heaps more asphalt on those roads now.

Like Ado said. Sunday mornings on Mt Stuart are always good. Get there early before the bike riders and before the sun gets too high.
