ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

Hi Guys, I am an independent film maker here in The Shire. I want to make a skateboard movie.

I am pretty much over the whole fish eye kick flip tricks deal and want to film something a little faster.

This is still in the initial planning stage but once we have figured out the legalities and locations we are ready to start filming. I would imagine this to be in around 6-8 weeks.

Although we have all of our own gear (I have a small team of film making tragics) we have ZERO budget and as such are doing this for love.

The reason I am writing this is to get an idea of

A) How big the sport is.

B) Do you or do you know someone that would like to be talent in our film.

C) Is it legal or are there places where it is legal

D) Who are the main people in the sport.

Thanks guys!

do you want skateboarders or longboarders?

Longboarders.

Everything is skating has been done!

For answers to A, B C & D, your best bet is to get to some events and meet us.

These are the big ones:

Bathurst.

or

Townsville

Ask for permission to film from event organisers.

my answers.

a).the sport is constantly growing,..it seems pretty big when you are immersed in the sport, but probably looks tiny to outside world,haha..yes there are professionals and there is prize money and pros that tour the world to races etc, there is also only a handful of legal events in australia annually..hard one to answer, define big.

b).there are hundreds of people that would love to be talent in your film,.your question is who do you want to showcase, existing pros, racers,up n coming, unknown freeride shredders, promising juniors, the women of downhill, sponsored or unsponsored, etc ,.the sport is largely made up of groms who would love the chance to be in a video of some quality,..and there are thousands of longboard videos, most skaters are doing their own edits.

c).most spots are illegal to ride and even the hills that are defined as legal to ride offer no guarantee of the cops moving you on anyway, every aspect of the sport is legal until you skate on the road.,there are better spots to spend time filming than others if thats what your wondering,.footage becomes evidence if you blow it.

d)the sport is mostly made up of groms of various skill levels and experience, aswell as a fair number of experienced riders, like i stated before,..there is aussie pros touring the world and theres the kid next door cruising down the path and everything in between.....there is a lot of good longboard skaters these days, sponsored or unsponsored, theres plenty of talent...and the older skaters who were doing it first are there running it and providing the platform for the sport to exist and grow,.its very much a community with passionate people keeping it alive.

What sort of roads are legal I wonder?

This is the basic stuff. You can search around on ASRA for some more but this is mostly it

Thanks guys, but I am just wondering if anyone knows where these legal spots are, i.e. a road limited to 50kms with no dividing line. If we are going to film it, it needs to be legal. HD film is pretty good evidence if anything illegal were to occur!

Also, is anyone keen to be in a film?

read the road rules and find hills/road that accord to those rules. no one wants to throw up road names to some dude that just got online and dont know shit about or sport, skateboard is a crime, dont worry about it, worse is to cop a $56 fine, if you want to learn DH filing tecnques then head out to an empy road with no lines and try out different mounts, angles, pans and shit.

do you have any vids online that we could check out?

I have read the road rules and am a little unsure of what the 'dividing line' means in honesty. I am not originally from NSW, so definitions like this I am unsure of. And you are quite right I do know 'shit' about your sport. That is why I have attempted to make contact here as part of the research. Quite frankly, I am a serious film maker at a commercial level and was wanting to produce some really nice photography to perhaps showcase your sport. A film, not just shot on a Go Pro... Do I really need to know much about it besides the legalities, really?

If I was to film a cooking show, does it matter that I can't boil an egg lol.

Reading between the lines here I am detecting a slight amount of hostility from your post, I can assure you I have zero to gain from even doing this project. If we make a film it will most likely be a straight to You Tube deal. I am not sure who you are, but I am just assuming you don't want to be a part of it, and thats fine.

Seriously, if anybody wants to perhaps chat about doing some stuff in it or perhaps offer some advice in terms of locations etc to shoot, pm me.

Cheers

There is no difference.

Carwyn I know a few spots that are legal to ride at. And lucky for me and you I am from The Shire. If you want to film the group I'm in can you talk to Harry at this e-mail harry@driftercruisers.com Tell him Daniel sent you.

Bugs I meant people riding shortboards or longboards.  Sorry for any confusion.
