ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

in response to a down turning Australian market place i thought i bring up an important issue and help re ignite some community spirit.

when i was growing up the Internet was slower then just skating across town to say gday, we had a hand built skate park that the locals built from their own $$$, those 5 older dudes were solid as, great riders and mates, they taught me respect, mate-ship and kick-flips, they not only built the skate park from ground up but also the community that soon followed. our local crew of 30 odd everyday-skaters grew and as it did a skateshop opened up in town, we now had a place to hang out when it was wet, watch videos, set up boards , buy wheels and talk shit. the shop started to hold comps and sponsored a few local rippers, a shop run by skaters, for skaters and giving back to the community. i remember these days as being golden, our community although small was so appreciative of what we had, knowing what a good thing it was we supported the shop and PCYC by giving em business and paying the skatepark fee.

today it seems alot different, and although no one can claim to building the roads we ride on, theres a certain number of riders that came before most of us that built the foundations to our sport and created whole new disciplines within it, passing on the stoke of longboarding to their mates and building a scene that supported each other.

somewhere between DH longboarding being leather clad and pastel colored short shorts the message has been lost and an inwards collapses begun. the understanding that without the skate park/scene builders and local shop owners we wouldn't be here and as strong as we are, with out them we wont be for much longer.

the dream of ever riding pro will remain that, a dream, an Aussie as World champ, another world cup at bathurst, more closed road freerides, awesome outlaws, product toss's, Aussy made boards, podium $$$, all the bonus's to competitive riding gone.

im calling out to all Australian Skaters to KEEP IT LOCAL, support the local retailers that support your scene.  if its through putting on a freeride and representing them on the local slide hill, spreading the stoked out on the boardwalk, telling anyone who asks where to get a setup from, all the way to buying your wheels or the newest board for the quiver.

WHATS YOUR LOCAL SKATE SHOP?

POST A PHOTO OF YOURSELF DOING WHAT EVER OUT THE FRONT OF IT OR JUST TELL EVERY ONE WHAT MAKES IT SO DAMN IMPORTANT TO YOUR LOCAL SCENE!!!

Our local doesn't have a bricks and mortar shop (yet) but they put the community before everything else, helping locals make it to races and get sponsorships. Always holding events and supporting the scene as best they can. I'd say Shredders is the reason for the increase in local talent in Canberra lately.

Go to http://www.shreddersboardstore.com.au and buy stuff from them! Today's the last chance to get some Early wheels for $50 too.
