ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

Hey everyone, just wondering if I need to win races or if I can just get sponsored for slides and going fast? I live in a small country town where the nearest race is 5 hours away. I can do most slides (Coleman, pushup, 180 heelside/toeside goofy and regular, 360 slide, pre drifts all that stuff) and I've gotten up to around 60 km/h. I know I dont stand a chance with land yachts or rayne but could I try and get sponsored by some Aussie brands?? If so what are some :)

Thanx ahead :D

Having sponsors is (or should be) like having a full time job. You don't just sit back and wait for the free shit to roll in. You have work to do, like Jacko said, you are being paid for work you have done for the company. Be it getting them hooked up at an event, making an event on behalf of them, winning a race, making a video or whatever. You work for your sponsor. If you can't do that then you won't be getting hooked up.

You also have dues to pay. There are folks out there who have been skating longer than you or I have been alive and they have never been sponsored by anyone. There are people who have broken bones, smashed heads, lost skin and witnessed their closest mates almost die or perhaps actually die. they have worked their entire life and spent every dollar they had on skateboarding, skate event's, skate trips, equipment and all the other shit. Have you paid your dues to skateboarding yet? Have I? Has anyone here? You have to ask yourself if you really deserve it at this stage of your skating life, and be honest. I skate with people everyday who I know deserve it more than I do, I'm sure a lot of people feel that way. The ultimate question when considering asking for free shit from a company is asking yourself ''why should they give it to me and not that other bloke?''

Thankyou you're very right there, I'll wait a while before thinking about it again thankyou all for your help :)

No worries man, happy skating! If it's meant to happen, it will happen!

Another point is some shops don`t even know what to buy these days they just stock crap.  I mean if you are skating to get other people stoked and having sessions, then it only makes sense that the shop would ask you "what should we order?"  Because most skateshops know nil about longboards.

So you are getting kids stoked, The kids don't know what to buy, the shop doesn't know what to buy.  You have to guide both groups.  And if the shop ends up stocking what you wanted them too. Then you get to ride what you want.
Doesn't always go smoothly though. It's always a tough road trying to get shops to realize those core brands like Kebbek, Landy, Early,Daddow ...

Good luck.  And DON'T rush it.   Seriously.   you only get better at skating as time goes on .

and the obligations aren't always a walk.
