ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

Thought I'd start a discussion about what equipment/techniques/ideas/etc. you all use to get the right shot when making those awesome skating videos.
it would also be a good place to ask any questions or talk about any problems relating to equipment, software, whatever.

Was playing around with this http://www.qsense.com.au/catalog/samsung-vpmx20-zoom-flash-memory-c... today in Dick Smiths. Its basically the perfect camera for skaters. Tiny (fits into your small DIY protective housing), records to SD card (less moving parts = better life), records in HD (not full HD, but good enough), has all the manual and auto functions you need to be a bit more creative and above all its only $298.

anyway, i'm getting one since my other one died on me.
there are two questions that need to be answered about that sort of camera:

A) can you fit a fish-eye lense on it?

B) does it take good SKATE footage?

Hop got one similar but of a different brand it its a pretty fucken good camera. the quality is of high definition and takes some really good video. Took it down to the snowy mountains on the first trip but realised when i got there that my 'snap-on' fish eye wouldnt fit. It fits on all video cameras, except that one.
Also it didnt like alot of fast moving frames. Shooting out of a car window at the scenery the focus was all over the place and when i played it back on the computer the shot was jumping all over the place.
Its a great little camera for average movies to be shot in hi-def but from a skater's point of view doing follow-shots and wanting the best quality given the size of cameras im forced to use i wasnt pretty keen on relying on it. I still think its a damn good camera for just the average joe though, but then again that might just be the el-cheapo model, and maybe this one is of a lot better quality than the one i used?
looks good leigh nice and compact, looks simlar to jackos actually. is it touch screen?
yeah i know what you mean jacko. the auto focus is the one thing i'm worried about, cos i know that the cheap cams struggle with that. i played around with that as much as i could with the display model at DSE and it seemed fine. if only i could take it out and test the sucker.
i'll have a look at the lens adapter capabilities aswell next time. cheers Jacko.
The greatest difference between these types of cams as well as small flash card cams and a more expensive hi def cam is the processor that operates the steadyshot or antishake feature. You will find that in the cheaper cams this feature almost does not exist. You will find that an expansive high def cam without this function operating will also have difficulty focusing
yeah this one has antishake
Haha yer Leigh that was the same one i was playing around with actually just in Bigw watch out there because i have seen it for about $248 here in qld, and on ebay they have a few of them.
those go-pro wide angles are the bomb dude... they are so tiny and you can put em just about anywhere. and they have a really wide angle... 270deg i think, thats FARKING wide for a small camera... the quality is alright, i cant use them coz i shoot with hi-def and the comparison between the two is two much but then again for the average joe they are definately a really good skate cam
If you want the best range of skate video cameras, please have a look at www.RaceRecall.com Jackson Shapiera uses em.

Hey
I use the Olympus U 1050 SW, it 1.5 meter shockproof and 3m waterproof, and "10.1" megapixel so it take some mad pictures and if your doiing a follow along you can drop it and it wont break. I also have a jvc video camera with "wide screen"
with the go pro mount u reckon u could use the sution cup mount on a full face helmet or do most people use the adhesive mount?
the suction cup mount only works on fairly flat and smooth surfaces, like for instance the bonnet of a car. if you somehow managed to get the suction cup to attach to your helmet, i wouldn't trust its stability at all.
