ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

OK folks, we're back after just a three-day break. The ASRA team has landed in Bathurst, and despite advance warnings of how cold it is we've still been surprised - it's brutally cold. My first task here was to buy some fingerless gloves and a very attractive hat:

Once suitably warmed we got settled into our luxury digs before heading out for some twilight mini-ramp action at the festival site. It's a 6' ramp, so more of a maxi-mini really, and it took its toll with Trav and Haggy taking some hard slams.

A blurry Trav heads for the coping, while Haggy, Blackwood, Pete and the Van of Love look on

Yes, it was cold up there. Bring your woolies. See you tomorrow. Rider check-in starts at midday at the Flannery Skillset Centre.

The view from the start line

Start line: Yatesy, James Kelly, Shane Dennehy and Charlie Harris

"What's happening with the women?" one of my loyal readers asks. Good question! Last week at Keira we had eight women racing, but Mt. Panorama is the big-wave surfing of skateboard racing, and we have only half the women this week. Here's the women's qualifying times:

Marisa Nunez (F) 71.580
Ishtar Bäcklund (F) 87.572
Gemma Holland (F) 78.624
Magaly Mcwhinnie (F) 88.500

...and that's also the order they qualified in after yesterday's triple tree. They'll be having four races today, with a points system to determine the winner. If there's a tie it'll be determined by their qualifying order.

Meanwhile, practice has finished for the day, and we're just about to get Round 1 of the Open Skateboard underway. Apparently rain is forecast for later in the day - a bit hard to believe with the sky so clear and still at the moment.

Hey whats the number to text for a shout out? Cheers, Alix (Luca's girlfriend)

I'm not sure who's phone Striker has today. Striker???

Big queue at the start line while we wait for...actually I'm not sure what we're waiting for. Oh, it's another resident wanting to go in or out of their house. How selfish of them!

Some rider updates:

  • Jeremy Rodgers is a scratching - sore ankle.
  • Henry King is a scratching - sore shoulder
  • Norberto Bertoncello is a scratching - neck injury
  • Benbro Hay is riding today but has a bad cold...not at his best.

And Mischo wins the first heat of the finals...

P-Swiss leads out Kelly C and Merrick, and then Merrick passes Kelly coming into Forest...nice move by Merrick, and Kelly's race is over (at least in Opens).

Also, no footbrake by P-Swiss at all in that run.

And James Kacz knocks out Josh Evans. Two of the fastest groms knocked out in the first round.

Dalua and Minglish knock out Caspian B.

And Api beats Louis Pilloni, and they knock out Sam D and Chris O.

The groms doing it hard in Round 1.

Marissa Nunez from Peru, the only women in the Open Finals, is knocked out.

Bathurst boy Rob McWhinnie on the line now.

Rob leads Gabe G all the way, while Reckless Ricky crashes at Forest trying to catch them.

Jayden Mitchell avoids the Round 1 grom curse and makes it through to Round 2.

Photo finish between Scoot Smith and Simon Duber. We need to go to the video on that one folks. It's to decide 2nd and 3rd, so it's an important one - 3rd place means no more racing today.

And it's Simon Duber knocking out Scoot Smith!!!! Big upset.
