ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

Just for the Groms who dont seem to see the need to wear helmets, I am interested in people answering the following (I would like to make it a poll, but that doesnt seem to be an option).

Please choose from:

  • I never wear a helmet and have never hit my head
  • I never wear a helmet and have hit my head
  • I always wear a helmet and have never had a use for it
  • I always wear a helmet and It has saved me
  • I always wear a helmet and It has saved my life

18 months ago my answer would have been:

I never wear a helmet and have hit my head.

After the above, I started wearing a helmet...

Now my answer is:

I always wear a helmet and it has saved my life.

Yep, I headed the warning and it saved my life 6 months later.

HELMETS ARE SICK BRO.

I always wear it and I have less hair scabs than I would have if I didnt wear it.

Fell down the stairs to my apartment the other day on the way to a skate, wasnt wearing my helmet, sucked balls man.

Hlmts4lyf.

I sometimes wear a helmet, and sometimes don't. The only times I have had a head injury have been when wearing a helmet.

So in my case wearing a helmet is associated with head injury. I imagine that's true for most people.

I can comfortably say had i not been wearing a helmet the last two years of skateboarding. I would be dead.

Bugs, maybe had you not been wearing the helmet you would be a vegetable or dead instead of having a minor head injury.

I probably wouldn't have ridden at all, and therefore not had any head injury.

Unless its a 2 minute push through uni when I'm late to class, I always wear a helmet. My brain bucket has definately saved me from a few concussions. My fullface probably saved me from being a vegetable.

Every time I've had a big head hit it hasnt been trying anything hectic, its been a completely unexpected lapse in concentration. Those shivers that run up your spine when you look at the grazes on your lid are so bitter sweet.

BJ - bucket was Protec B2, fullface was Bell Drop.

Can you clarify in your answers what type of helmet it was. Skate, bike, moto, etc.

99% I wear a helmet and it has saved me,

haha bugs you shit stirrer,

I am an advocate for wearing helmets, after a stack riding switch on my snowboard had me seeing stars and blurry vision for 6hrs (I dont feel that asphalt and concrete are as forgiving as snow).

but if Im just pushing up the street, Im not wearing a helmet.

Just a bucket usually, fullface designed for mountain bikes when im bombing.

I usually wear one, except when I'm just pushing the 4 min skate to class at uni or to the shops. The only time I have hit my head I wasn't wearing a helmet, and got 3 stitches in my eyebrow.

There you have it, if you really want to avoid head injuries then don't ride a skateboard.

If you are going to be riding one, wear a lid.

Had some pretty bad stacks while on road and dirt bikes, and helmets definitely saved me.

Had a couple of stacks skating, one of which would have been serious if not for the helmet.

A couple of years ago, a rad skater from Melbourne died from a stack on the Prahran Vert ramp ...no helmet, cause he had wrecked it from a stack on the same ramp a few weeks before, and had not yet got round to replacing it.  He left a wife and kid.

99% I wear a helmet.

As people have said, unless its a quick push to the shops or what ever I always have a lid (even on those short skates I usually have a helmet). I have had occasions where it has saved my head and have seen them save others too. I just ware a normal half shell, I've never been fast enough to warrant owning a full face (not yet any way ;) )
