BEAT THE BASTARD SOME INFO FOR NEW RIDERS

Ok, we have put up a new vid of the course with a guided tour commentary on the site at http://www.beatthebastard.com.au/default.asp?PageID=24&n=Mt+Stu... I'd like to think everyone who hasn't ridden Mt Stuart would have a very close look at this vid and take note of the necessity to be able to brake while going downhill and accelerating. This hill is not like Pump Station where you don't need to brake. If you can't brake solidly this is not the hill for you. As this is a freeride there will not be bales all the way down the hill, we will have bales at strategic locations but it will be expected that riders are sufficiently competant to not be hitting them or running off the road where there aren't any.

I know that the previous BtB thread was moved to the actual event page, but I really need this thread and the one I am about to write about guardians for groms to be read and understood.

dont do that joe,thats what gab said to me at the top of mt pano on our first run ever down it......and he crashed hard ..haha
i was like ''dude i dont kno the lines''......
definately wheels merrick,...and reliable shoes,footsole that will last,coz when your tight with other crew you gotta footbrake at times,and this hill wears things out quik......the shutdown area-its either destroy wheels to stop or destroy footsoles/shoes!

Ok, guys were madly building brake soles on the bottom of the hill all weekend last year, so bring a couple of sets of shoes well shod and I think Jacko went through 6 sets of wheels (is that right mate?) last year too. This hill eats gear. When Martin rode with us he destroyed a set of 76mm Flys in 10 runs!!!!!

By the end of the Sunday last year guys were begging for rest and we shut down 'cos crew were getting too tired to be safe. The utes did over 70 runs up the hill over the 2 days last year and that didn't include the SGS. There should be waaaaay more runs than anyone can handle.

@ Benbro, Hahah yeah but you were on yours v's to mt pano like alot of the people. At least mt.Stuart you've tammed it for at least two days last year ahaha. Thats still better then quite a few people who have never ridden it. Just like at the snowy runs, just don't get blown off infront of me this time ahahah........
@Ado Hmmmmmm more runs than anyone can handle, Thats better than hearing your lotto numbers come up on a wednesday night hahaha :)

Last year I went up with the standup guys to see how they were going. It was 11am on the Saturday and I asked if they were getting enough runs. Pete Hill asked me what the time was and when I told him he reckoned he'd had more runs than in the previous 6 months and he'd lost count! However, that could be due to how much time Pete spends building boards for guys instead of skating, and the losing count, well he did have shoes on and his slide gloves did hold some of his fingers together (;-)>

Wow wee........11am and people had done that many runs yewww. Yes after experiencing The Glyde Factory (some groms may call it) I take my hat off to Pete building those boards and still managing to get out and shred on the skateboard with a fragile shoudler, and by the sounds of it he must of had difficulty trying to count the runs as welll ;) . Better start training my body so I get the most out of the weekend as possible!!!!!

Something else you need to consider is the weather. This is the tropics, think Sydney or Brissie in February then increase the humidity and temp a bit and that is Townsville in May. You need to keep the fluids up and you need to pace yourselves.

yeah guys this is going to be an epic event...to answer your question merrick it will be shoes that you need more than wheels for the first bit until you get comfy on this hill you'll wear out your shoes trying to control your speed..once you get a few runs in youll start speed checking more then the wheels come into it but you gotta brake pretty hard in the shut down area and its not always posible to slide with other ridders around so a good footbrake on this hill is a must and i know will be looked at to make sure people can handle the hill...

i wouldt be surpised if we see another mad scramble for footbrake souls :)

one thing everyone here is overlooking is PUCKS! there were so many pucks worn away over the weekend it wasnt funny. i would suggest taking a spare set of gloves and several sets of pucks. One thing i found myself doing was slowing down using my pucks through the corners to keep my distance from other skaters, and also leaning into the tighter corners i put more pressure on my pucks, this road just grinds everything away... so yeah pucks you will also wear down quick

Don't forget that there were up to 10 riders in a pack last year. This can get conjested in some of the corners (;-)>
