we were there on a sat at lunch and it was dead,the rd quality is pretty crap and its compounded by the fact that u do about 70km/h even wen ur airbreakin,we started just after the really steep section before the summit,we were keen to try it but i rekon u could pull about 100km/h and the rd surface would throw u at that speed,with death as a result,but we went to the other side(see mountain of surprises)and even tho it was still abit rough it was good fun and just somethin different than mountain hwy

Was that the bit before the sumit any good, or is the pavement still crap?
There are lots of good roads to explore in that area.
DONT do it on Sundays....too many bikes and 4x4's
The pub at McMahons Creek (bottom of Reefton Spur) is also good.
