EVERYONE was on a gravity-fuelled high yesterday at Mount Panorama for the final day of Newton’s Playground 2009.Competitors from all over the world braved the violent, gusty wind on that famous track unique to Bathurst.

Despite the windy conditions there was a decent audience on hand throughout the weekend to cheer on the dare devils as they shot down the Mount on only skateboards, small bikes and street luges.

Kevin Reimer from Vancouver BC in Canada took out the 2009 IGSA World Championship in Downhill Skateboarding and was on a high after his big win.

“I am stoked and really happy, exuberant, awesome,” he said. “It is a long way to get here and I had no idea I would get this far. My uncle is here from Adelaide and it is just awesome to be here.

“This is such a heavy event. The track is really fast and steep and very technical. The pavement is unlike anything else in the world, it is just craziness.”

Mr Reimer was also impressed with his stay in Bathurst. “It is a small, little town but beautiful,” he said.

St John Ambulance were on hand throughout the weekend, ready for any accidents which might occur.

Spectators were kept entertained by Brycin “Striker” Lyons from Canada throughout the weekend, whose “radical” commentary on the race did not slow down once.

The 1.3 kilometre course starts from the Skyline at the top of the Mount and finishes on Conrod Straight, with riders reaching speeds of more than 100km/h. Wind gusts of up to 57km/h just added to the thrill of the race.
