ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

Hey guy am new to the site and the world of longboarding! im attenpting to build my second board, my fist was a fail but i didnt use the right wood.

So here is my question to u, does anyone know where i can buy bamboo veneers or hoop pine ply 3mm in canberra! or any type of sutable wood for a longboard. Ive tryed litterally everywhere! and no one carries the right size or the right wood. (as a side note; no one has foam for a dimm press either)

Alternativly does anyone know of a site that sells the right stuff and will deliver it cheaply?

thanks guy, please dont say do more research because i have googled the shit out of this and called a lot of places!

Forgot to add if you know places in your home town, city area whatever that does carrie longboard building materials, list them  below because this could be a really good resourse for other people trying to buy wood it their area!
thanks again

Styrofoam - you might try http://www.capitalinsulation.com.au/contactus.html - they're in Fyshwick

Amerind are good for Veneers but I would call them first (www.amerind.com) they're also in fyshwick (283 Canberra Avenue, Fyshwick 2609)

I'm In Melbourne and it took me months to find supplies of the right stuff.  Veneers were almost non-existent - there's a mob in Sydney call Briggs (www.briggs.com.au) who specialise in the stuff but I'm not palnning to be there anytime soon!

Brush up on your googlin' skills brother - I found these guys in Fyshwick in the same time it took me to type this message!

I ended up using 1.5mm Hoop pine and it behaves almost like veneer in a Raorockit TAP kit :)

Good luck.

quick clarification - the 1.5mm hoop pine is 3-ply...

In Melbourne:

1 inch and 2 inch thick blue Styrofoam - https://secure.solidsolutions.com.au/ (Bentleigh)

$20 for a half sheet of 1" - good for at least 2 moulds (maybe 3 if they're small decks you're building)

2400x1200x1.5mm Hoop Pine (3-ply) - www.marinetimbers.com.au (Seaford)

$120

Good work mate, what a champion!

How does the 1.5mm hoop pine go for decks? iv heard a lot of people in australia use it. I was thinking about it as a cheaper option compared to bamboo or something like that. Do you know any suppliers in canberra? Ill give that Amerind a call tomorrow i the mean time ill try searching google for hoop pine places, let you know if i can find anything.

cheers

Google doesn't have all the answers unfortunately

Amerind's veneer was, last time I checked, just like many other veneer places. 0.6mm face veneer. No good for boards.

Briggs maple veneer is available really only in sizes suitable for shortboards

Having built a couple of decks out of hoop pine, I can say that it is a viable option. You will need some sort of composite reinforcement though if you want a board that is responsive and stiff. Torsional flex issues need to be dealt with when using hoop pine.

The above is especially true when using the 1.5mm ply. Although it behaves like veneer in a bag or press, if you use it soley for your board you will have a heavy sloppy flexy deck. This is due to only very thin layers of veneer that make the ply. Its not impossible to make a good board out of the 1.5mm ply. Its just harder and more expensive. You should be paying around $90 for a sheet last time I checked, which was 4-5 months ago, it may have gone up since then due to demand

Much better off using the 3mm stuff, although even it requires reinforcement. Its no good for decks with sharp drops but you can get two boards out of one sheet. About $80 a sheet.

Good luck :)

There is a shop in Canberra across from Office works in Fyshwick

I made a deck out of one of the ply's they had. Cant remember timber type but it was OK for my use

3ply but only 1.5-2.0mm thick. They stock it and primarily sell it for aircraft applications. Was fairly expensive but light and strong.

from my experiance it works out cheaper to leave it to the seriouse backyard pro's unless your planing on making a few and willing to experiment a bit to get it right, was fun doing it but would pay someone next time.

I gave Amerinds a call earlier today and had a chat to the guy, they only sell 4mm marine grade hoop pine ply (although i looked up there web site after the call and it says they have 3mm exterior grade hoop pine so im not sure :S) they also do maple veneers and he said they could make a 1.5mm peice but for a 2400 x 600 sheet it was going to be about $66!! :O enough for about a 4 ply board. Way out of my league as a beginner with not a lot of cash.

Ill keep searching for some 3mm hoop pine i guess.

Do you recommend anything other than hoop pine with a resonable price that will make a decent board? other wise ill glass the bottom of the board

Yer there is a harware store across from office works, i looked tin up just then lol, ill try and find out what they stock.

Ultimatly i would like to make a few and try and sell them off on ebay or something like that to balance out the cost of making them, thus making my money spent on the project $0!

What do you think, will people buy them if they are good quality? or are homemade boards sales non-existant? As a side note i do have some wood working experience (my dads right into, it so i have all the tools etc) just not in the longboard feild!

thanks again for your help guys!

Try marine ply or gaboon ply. All materials are expensive though especially if your just doing a few. At the start you will most likely spend as much building one as you can buy a board for. That may sound a bit much but once you add up all the bits and pieces you need you will be suprised.

People will buy them if they are good quality but probably not on ebay where you are competing against cheap chinese completes and if you charge for materials only at the start. Get some good rep then you can start charging for your labour

All the best Joe!

thanks for all the responses and glad to see some interest in our part of the world. I've just finished with the drop deck I'm making in my shiny new Roarockit bag - pic's attached.  I used 8 layers of the 1.5mm Hoop pine and it's plenty stiff.  I am(sad to say!) 95kg's and there's very little flex.  It took 4 lay-ups to achieve the complex bends (2 sheets at a time) but the result in my opinion is mast satisfying (for me as the builder at least!).  I'll be glassing the bottom of it today and hopefully be ready to roll by next weekend.

If you are interested in bamboo, we could offer bamboo solution in any thickness. One layer of veneer, or 3ply veneer etc...Check www.smartbamboo.com and contact us for any questions.
