ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

I thought I would add a discussion purely for our build pics.

Ok well here is our first build. Its a dropthrough freeride with a wheelbase of 31.5 inchs. Its 10 inchs at it is widest and 9 in the middle. Made from 4 3mm plys with 6oz plain weave glass on top and a fabric graphic on the bottom.

Lets just say this deck did not entirely go to plan. It all started out ok but not having much experience with fibreglass and finishing let us down in the end. We didn't have a deep enough epoxy depth on our fabric graphic and as a result we sanded in to the cotton, making it look shit.

Not to worry the board itself is mega stiff with a gnarly concave (19mm) and feel great to ride. We
learnt heaps on this build and the next on will be much better. Next one will be a carvy type of deck with some nice camber and snappy flex

Feel free to give us any tips or share your thoughts
cheers stevo

WOW, bloody fantastic job! why buy boards when you can make them, nothing gives the feeling of pwning shit up with a home board. Feels Guddds, Good job bro

Ok Welcome to Fat Pigeon Longboards!

Here's my second build and I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. Need to sort out my finishes as there still not great, my learning curve at the moment is quite steep, I'm lovin it.

Its a dropthrough pintail with wheel cutouts. Its 45" long with a wheelbase of 29.5".It has about 1" of foward orientated camber and has a nice relaxed concave of about 1/2" decreasing towards the rear of the deck. Its been designed to be a cruisy carver with some snappy flex. Under my 95 kg it flexes about 20mm at the most and I'm stoked with the snap of the flex, its awesome.

Constructed from ply and glass, pressed in a foam press. Ive got it set up on 50 degree randal plates, force hangars set up really loosely on 76mm pink big zigs. No wheel bite stoked!

Thanks goes out to paul for the info on the clear coat.

Hey Steve, Board looks fantastic- what a weapon! Clear looks great, but its a little hard to see with all that shine reflecting back in my eyes haha
your boards are comming along in leaps and bounds
champion keep it up!

and a tip i learned the hard way....
if the deck is going to be quite flexi- a super thick coat (or three) of feasty may stress fracture over time.... the cheaper clears will for sure.
you can try the clear spray they sell at hobie stores made for painting thin plastic body shells they use on remote controll cars and thingys
not as super shinny but still looks sweet - but it'll flex like a body builder does in front of the of girls!

keep up the great work
Cheers
Paul.
Thanks Paul! I will give that a go. Don't forget to let us know about your custom work once you have figured out a price. I'd love to have your work on one of my decks.

Hey all, I noticed the randal site has guides for cutting out drop throughs, for Randal trucks yep, but its a good place to start, just BE SURE to chk the bolt hole pattern is the right size after you print them out- and scale up/down if needed to get them right!

drop the above link into your browser, i think should work- or just click on it.
some good info on truck maintenance aswell as tips...

This is the half way mark of the press. all sections have moulded well very suprised and happy.

Nice work Adam! Looks awesome!

I have had trouble though when pressing in two goes like you are. What happens is the top ply shape of the 1st press is not exactly the same as the botom ply of the 2nd and when you glue them together they don't always meet no matter how much force you put on the press.

This was on a drop deck with some gnarly bends so hopefully you'll be ok. I pressed the same drop deck in one go and it worked heaps better.

Have you got ant other shots to show the concave/drop a bit better?
check my profile i was quite conservative with the concaves and i know what you mean and will be doing one press next time. Just was not sue of the potential. really worked better than i expected, did you see the press pics. i will take side profile shots when i take it out. are you still using marine and bunnings ply??????
