Where to get Downhill helmets for Luge ?
I know back in the day we used Snow wedge helmets, if you didn't hit your head they were great.
But a Helmets life is only 5 years and it doesn't look like they make them anymore.
Where o what helmet is being used for Luge these days ?
Are you guys using DOT approved or Snell rated Helmets ?

Hi Rian, the best person to talk to about helmets is Damien Sturgess...he's a member on here so send him a message. I know Damien has some Wedge helmets, as to whether he has your size well thats another issue, but message him.
Just for your imformation, An "Australian Standards" rating is higher than both "DOT" and "Snell".

The paperwork on the testing for the three is very long, so I'll summarise if thats ok.
Australian Standards is more stringent than "Dot"/"Snell", by that I mean the amount of testing which is done to pass a helmet "Type". A manufacturer, in order to have a helmet "type" gain approval must follow these requirements.
The manufacturer must supply 4 out of every 100 helmets made to the testing organisation. This is done for the first thousand helmets manufactured. If this stage is passed at 100%, then the manufacturer supplies 4 out of every thousand helmets produced for a total of 5000 helmets produced. If ANY helmet fails ANY aspect of the testing process, the testing goes back to square one and the manufacturer must begin the helmet submittance program all over again.
Testing: Every part of the helmet is tested, for strength, compression, penetration, fastening clasp for resistance as well as all straps. Even the "peripheral vision" is tested, and if this fails, the design, regardless of construction, will fail.
Resistance to Penetration: The helmet is placed on a headform, then a pointed x 3kg steel striker is dropped from three meters directly onto the helmet. This test is done on four differant areas of the helmet. No contact between the striker and the headform is allowed.
Temperature/Water: All helmets are tested for deterioration under temperature, ie, HOT 50 Degrees Celsius, COLD -5 Degrees Celsius and Ambient 20 Degrees Celsius. The helmet is also submerged for a time period in a water tank to test for deterioration.
Impact Energy Attenuation: A helmet is placed on a headform and dropped from a predetermined height to check for "G" force pressure on the headform. A maximum pressure of 300g is the standard, ie, your head will only feel 300g of pressure compared to a possible 3 to 4 "G" forces.
Retention tests are carried out on all straps and clasps, ie,NO elongation of a strap is permissible.
The actual testing code for helmets is "AS/NZS 1698.
Testing is done by independant testing bodies who are responsible to the NSW Road Traffic Authority who are responsible to Aust Govt.
"Dot" and "Snell"s testing regime is nowhere near as stringent as ours, with the Aust Standards acclaimed and regarded WorldWide as the "Standard for Safety"
Sorry this is summarised, Furlong, but it gives you an idea of the testing regime the helmets go through.

Glad to hear the stricter rules in Australia.
But any idea what the rules are for racing and what people are doing for helmets these days ?
Where to buy in the USA ?
I did find a site that is selling the Wedge helmet but I am sure they are out of date since they were made a decade ago.

Most riders still use wedges, as long as they're still in good condition and will pass tech. For all racing and tech rules checkout the IGSA website/rulebook.
