The Popularity of Longboarding
I don't know if NN has much of an effect on this or if it's just a perfect sign of how fast this sport has taken off, but today thru work, i received 12 tonne of Sector 9 longboards and by the look of the order size, that was the tip of the iceberg. If that is just one of many brands coming into this country at these levels, it shows a very healthy growth level within the sport and ultimately enabling the collective a loud enough voice within the community to have our demands heard more

Say 4kg for a complete setup..
100kg = 25 boards
1000kg = 250 boards
12 tonnes = 3000 boards.
Thats freaking awesome. I don't care if they're bamboo series, thats just the first stepping stone on one's joyous path to discovering downhill.

It's good, but..... more surf grommets jumping on a pintail/cruiser, refusing to wear a helmet, hitting 40+ and smashing head open on the road. More likelihood of Today Tonight style negative publicity storm leading to crackdown or police focus on longboarding.
That's my pessimistic view. Not wanting to be elitist, but when something explodes in popularity, it's generally not a good thing.

We had exactly that happen in the 70's.
What we have now is this thing called ASRA, and a lot of us who have learned from mistakes.
We should all be able to collectively and individually promote some idea about riding safely to our new skating comrades, by telling them about how to manage the risks, and most importantly by example.
That shipment is excellent news for Sector 9, who really helped ASRA with Bathurst.

In a way, no publicity is bad publicity. Although then we would have even more idiots who get a longboard and ride without a helmet...
Look when i first started i didnt have enough for a skate helmet. and my rents were nazis. so guess who met gabe with a...bike helmet.............
but longboarding is becoming more widespread, especially within the grom community (I am a grom and am in a crew of longboarders at my school, our deputy is cool with us leaving our boards in his office plus when people see them they ask what they are)
Im still new to longboarding but even i can see how it is growing and the direction it is taking. I have many ideas about longboarding and other associated stuff. Im in a street performing crew and were gonna organize a gig soon and wed love to feature longboarding, like if we did it in coogee theres this mad hill and a place where we could set up the gig. If anyones interested in talking further about any possible publicity that we can do for longboarding let me know :)

I recon a bike helmet would protect you better than normal skate shop helmets with the soft foam in them (these are not crash rated and are generally referred to as "hard hats", about as good as strapping a couple of knee pads to your head). Also bike helmets are more aero!
If your buying a skate helmet get one with EPS (expanded polystyrene). They usually cost more because they are Australian Standards rated but at least they are not just for looks.
