Suggestions for a noobie

Hi all,

 

First post!  I have a mate who longboards into uni each day, and in the absence of surfing opportunities (I now live too far from the coast), I'm thinking longboarding would be a good bit of fun!

 

However, as I've never skated before, and the times I've tried I've ended up on my backside, I'm keen to work out a fairly cheap way to get into it, so that if I fail mightily I won't be too out of pocket...

 

At this stage I'm mostly after something for commuting (home to station, etc), and maybe just coasting around a bit on the weekends.  I understand the huge variety of boards out there, but am looking for some suggestions as to a good (cheap) way to get into the sport!  I'm not averse to new or second hand gear, but would love to get a complete setup for around $100 (+ safety gear :P )

 

Appreciate any ideas :-)

save money you only need one set of bearings. unless uan has a mad bulk deal for ya

hm, matt just offered me a loaded dervish deck for under $100... now I have to choose :-S

Dervish is sick beginner board. You can carve, dance, commute and still learn to slide.

take the loaded if its in good nick thats a great deal....i got my dervish brand new a couple of years ago and it was like 400 complete but im still riding it today

Apparently the board is "old and has some scratches on it"... I'm thinking that with that description I'm better sticking with uan's Kalai ... It looks like quite a similar deck to the dervish.

Get pictures of the board. The dervish doesnt have much of a graphic thus scratches are not as obvious but any of those boards will do :) The dervish will also be lighter which imo is important for a cruiser- makes it easier to do tricks on as well. Only problem is everyone has a dervish these days....that kalai graphic is beautiful :)

Wohoo!  After meeting Uan and Ben's wife (and child to-be), and discovering that Ben is a mate's wife's cousin, I now have a board :-) 

 

A bit of time spent making sure I put the trucks on the right way, googling what I'm meant to do with spacers, and finding the right size sockets for the wrench, and she's looking good!

 

Ended up costing closer to $200, but I'm really happy with it :D

 

Just waiting on my pads + helmet now before I head out for real...

I ordered them earlier in the week, so hopefully will arrive before the weekend :D

 

Where can I get details for the bombsquad?  Do you guys meet at the same place each week?  Do you really want a total rookie tagging along?

bombsquad is for all skill levels, click here for info or search in sites and sessions under the forums tab for more sessions near your area. You gotta start somewhere dude!

I started by cruising up and down my street (I live in a culdesac).  Had good fun, and no stacks woo!

 

So far so good. Still getting the hang of foot braking, but everything else seems to be going aaight.

 

Weird thing: I surf goofy, but skating natural felt best.  Go figure.

i've been going to bombsquad for a while and i still lag at the back of the pack. dont worry man come to learn and have some fun :)
