ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

Well now it is my turn for an annoying post!

I am very interested in the technique behind these speed checks which seem to be winning people races all over the world these days. I think Bathurst is going to be interesting at forests elbow with nobody footbraking anymore.

From what I have seen the weight of the body needs to be put right foward while in the crouch then using the back foot to kick out the tail. I have tried it a couple of times but worry that if I kick to hard the board will end up squared and stop which will mean I fly off it.

Anymore handy hints where speed checking is concerned?

get with it dani, thought everyone was doin em,..i dont kno if footbraking will be dead at newtons,i think it might be one race still were footbraking may still be used alot..i have heard[have never been there myself]that it is not the ideal surface to be breakin the wheels out on[somthin about the composite of the surface]...i am sure you will see the top guys tryin everything including speedchecks ..you would definatly want to have them dialled tho to use them to success on that track and at those speeds.,that is the thing with them, lots of people can do em at med pace on lame little corners but to nail it sweet at 70klm/h is a whole different story..losing total traction and slidin into the hay is on the cards...unless u ride for loaded..!
oh yeh,if your board stops you are goin to slow...,i have been kicked off a few times tryin em...its easy to overdo it and thro it out to much and at speed your gone..lose total traction and never bring it back...i did this at BTB a few times..ended up in the dirt...find a hairpin and keep at it
from memory, lundburg won bathurst no speedchecks or footbreaking (dont think ethan lau was breaking at the end either)
in hearing that ,speedchecks may not come into it unless you are forced into a tight position and have to avoid collision/crash etc.all the top racers wont be braking much there now then...all balls and head down.....i kno ill be brushin the foot on the ground a bit
go hard and thrash it, if your wearing a helmet and leathers its the best time to try it, but just balls out and practice. spend a whole day just sessionin a fav corner and try every entry and exit slide you want to do, speed checks are stlying and fun, just practice.
Yeah indeed been thinking about this for awhile, will have to see what the tracks like before i make up my mind of course.
But still will be practicing to speed check at high speeds, and yeah often have trouble with after pulling one off doing one so quick i get back around and get thrown off my board.
from memory ethan lau took it full out (hes not human though) and jumped from forth to second at forest, so crazy

different ball game this year mate. Speed checking wasn't seen much, if not at all in racing until this year. plus the skill levels have times by 100 since last year.

its going to be a very different race than last years i reckon.
Its still not completely kosher to speed check big in a race. Guys like Kelly qualify with it when there is only one person on track but in a 4 man heat you can still very easily get disqualified if you screw it up or go too big and someone is next to you on a fast corner.
I would like to see a loaded rider throw a standup around forest elbow i would just go for that. Is that next to impossible or what!
Nice video Mark, thanks for that. This weeks mission me thinks.

Does anyone know a crazy cat called Tom Green? Has sex with dead moose's (can you pluralise moose?) and promotes the fork in japanese hotels at 3 in the morning. These dudes remind me of him. Similar humor. They seem like nice guys.
