I think I can help.

 The most enjoyable and entertaining non-directional pintails only come from the use of a blindfold, a big drink of red cordial, and spinning 7.5 times before grasping the detached tail firmly between thumb and forefinger, being carefull not to prick your finger on the pin, and approaching the board with the picture of the equine creature(sans tail) with the determination to reunite both tail and quadruped in the most anatomically correct maner.

PS omitting the blinfold and failing to spin would of course remove the non-directional feature from your pintail!
