Daniel off downhill again 20/08/2009 5:04:00 PM
(Unfortunatley the lady CANNOT take photos!)
Daniel Hawes, pictured right, is at it again. The 22 year old downhill skater will make his debut on the world circuit next month when he competes in the Maryhill Festival of Speed in Washington State, US.
The four-day gravity sport festival takes place from September 2 to 6 and features riders from all over the world.
Hawes and five others will represent Australia this year reaching speeds of 80kmh at the event.
The event is televised all over the United States and Canada as well as some live feeds available on the internet.
For Hawes and the others this will serve as good race practice for the world championships which will be held on the iconic Bathurst race track in NSW later this year.
Downhill skating is relatively unheard of in Australia which means athletes are forced to fund the travel and race expenses themselves.
“It is a good and a bad thing” Hawes said.
“It means that you will only be racing against people who really love the sport and are willing to put all of their time, effort and money into it.
“On the other hand it means that a lot of people miss out because they simply can’t afford it.”
Hawes is sponsored by Kooky speed trucks but is always on the lookout for more sponsorship opportunities.
If you would like to get in contact with Hawes or follow his race progress you will find him on the Australian Skateboard Racing Association (ASRA) website.
