ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

G'day people , I want to get in to long boarding but do not have a heap of money to do it I am looking at a Comet Voodoo D2,Caliber 50 trucks, bones Red bearings and Orangatang in heat orange wheels 75mm 80a, I can get this set up for about $360, I would like to do down hill as I live in Wollongong and mount keria is 15 min drive from my house, I have seen people doing downhill it looks fun, but I do not know how hard it is, I can wish there was a good skate shop were I live all the shops want to sell me around here are sector 9's and even a so called skate shop that is the only brand he stocks. I do understand I will need a helmet, knee and elbow pads, gloves and leathers later on, I did ride a motorbike. Any help anyone can give me would be nice.

your motorbike lid and jacket should help ya out heaps. start on smaller hills and build your confidence, hook up with you locals and lastly.

do yourself a favour, trek up to the hopshop. they'll sort ya out with gear

helmet and gloves you should not get later on, you should get them FIRST. If you are even thinking of skating at Mt  Keira at any time in the near future (which i surely hope isnt any time soon as your still quite new) you will need to get into the mind set that safety comes FIRST.

There are plenty of spots around wollongong to shred and learn on but Mt Keira is definately not one of them. Im sure you can hook up with some of the local crew there to show you the ropes but dont try hit that hill until you have enough experience with riding on the road with traffic and perfected your cornering and stopping techniques, otherwise you will either hit a car or a guardrail and get quite messed up

i would love to learn but I do not know 1 person with a skateboard, i was not planing to hit Mt keira in the near future I do know I need to learn, main thing i want to do is to be able to learn in Wollongong. I also want to know is this Board I am looking at with the set up, is ok to do what i want? I was talking about getting the leather's later.

right on. yeah that board is fine. if you feel like its going to be a good one then it will be a good one. there is no "bad" board, just "bad taste" and everyone has their own taste...

stay on this website and try and link up with some skaters from the gong. i know there is a group on here somewhere called the Gong Squad, otherwise just post up a thread saying you want to learn and you live in wollongong and you want to meet some skaters in or around your area and are looking to learn, people will find you

That setup will be awesome but it will be a long time before you can use it to its full potential. As Jacko said, get your safety gear sorted first then learn the basics of turning and speed control. Have fun but don't expect to tackle Kiera within the first 6-12 months.

Also, get a set of Venom SHRs or Loaded yellow nipples to replace the Caliber bushings, which are The Worst Bushings In The Entire World.

Maybe not nipples..... Get a setup with some normal venom Dh and SHR barrels or just talk to the Hop Shop Crew. They know everything!

g'day thanks for all the help, I have seen the safety gear for skate boarding and it all looks a lot like motor cycle gear even the gloves are gloves with Velcro on them and thick pads on the pram and fingers, even the helmets look like motorcycle one's which is not a bad idea if you coming down hill at 50ks or more, as for most of the leathers i have seen people wearing in vid's are motorcycle ones which is not a bad idea either since they have good pads in all the right places, I wish now i did not sell my bike leathers which I paid over $800 for and my helmet was the same sort of money. But I know were i can get some second hand leathers, I really do not think I would ever buy a second hand helmet as its my head that's need the most protection but i do not know if i will be spending the almost $400 for a lid that is full face but I will see I know a full face helmet has saved my face once already when a blind car driver took my off my motorbike.

The days of needing leathers and a full face are a long way off, mate. Get good kneepads, a BMX helmet and a set of slide gloves. That's all the protection you'll need.

always pack your intelligence when you skate too
