ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

A brief thing on sunrise about someone named Mat doin downhill and filming it and putting on the net, ...etc...Kochie described him as a "brickhead"

Will probably show up on 7 through the day...story was definately "look at this dickhead, someone's gotta stop him killing somebody" kind of story.

' YOU JUST GET UP AND GO AGAIN '   Head on at 90 k's. I don't think so .Obviously one crash to many already.

Trav, my post wasn't a shot at ASRA, it was only a direction of thought based on nearly 15 years of dealing with the press while I've been involved in Gravity Sports in Australia.

this story is a 'look at that idiot 5 minute fluff piece' if anyone speaks to the media to go on the defensive you will just bring more light to the situation, rather than letting it pass.

tomorrow everyone will have forgotten about it (unless news is slow and another source jumps on the bandwagon). then you would take that approach (as NZ handled their multiple press coverage a few months ago) - bearing in mind that most people have forgotten about that onslaught of negative press already.

You of all people should remember the anti luge press about 4-5 years ago when media got hold of a video and saying how stupid and dangerous it was, but it passed. Did it have any effect on the sport? no.

The best skaters in Australia frequent this site, and when bad publicity has cropped up they've expressed their views to push the "offenders" in a positive, constructive direction. "Matt" obviously has some skill, but a serious lack of any rational or consequential mental capacity, regardless of advice given by better, and more respected riders, than himself(if he's read any of the previous threads on this site)

Obviously, this kind of publicity effects all disciplines, and hinders sponsorship for organisers of any "Type" of event, as well as sponsorship of individual riders.

The media is often seen as a negative, however it can often be turned around and used as a positive tool: As the sanctioning body for skateboarding in Australia, maybe ASRA should go on the offensive, openly and publicly, and decry the actions of rogue skaters like "Matt" to the media, and use them to paint a positive picture, instead of the media dictating how skateboarding is portrayed.

Last week 3 skaters from a Qld area were charged with various types of public nuisance/endangerment charges for being dragged behind a car through public streets with traffic. Luckily the media have kept it on the downlow, at this stage, but the charges are public domain. A "low story" day, someone goes looking, and then this story also becomes another page in the "bad publicity" book.

should also note that this story was presented on the same day Russia was attacked by Terrorist... misbehaving skater is pretty insignificant in comparison for the average punter..

people just need to not get soo worked up when bad press arises...

If someone from ASRA was to speak up and try to put their side forward, it would do irreperable damage to this association and the sport.

All you have to do is look at some, not all, of the videos that are posted on this site. Cutting corners, near misses with cars and being dragged along behind utes. Not to mentio the recent number of incidents with members being hit by cars and adding discussions about it.

All of the evidence the media and authorities need is on this site.

Do what Trav says and let it pass!

Should just grab the asra banner and go on the background of sunrise
What. A. Dick.
Apparently, never met him though. Lots of people about the place though i suppose.
he was having trouble drafting and passing at Newtons', i found Mat and his bother to be pretty cool and, i (a luger) gave him directions on how to do it properly, that is move out a "bit" at least, not a couple centimetres! he just didn't know! maybe he dosen't realise what he's doing in regard to becoming an impromptu spokesman for our community. But what he does on his skatie is his buisness, ( what a duckhead in regard to the safety of others), ASRA shouldn't be barring people from competing in respect of noncompetition recreational persuits (most of us would be fucked).we as a competitive sport have come a long way. and this guy needs to be "HELPED" to cut out the bravado. what would any of us have done if we got the 15 minutes of fame!

just my opinion:
i think we should all stop saying "get ASRA representatives to stop shit tell their story to the press" or some shit, for sure some one should give this dude a gentle nudge and say "wake the fuck up!", but as long as we can keep ASRA as an organisation out of the media's recognition then we wont all go down on the one ship.
like if they wanted to shut down gravity sports in Australia, ASRA would show many "illegal" videos, and the population of the sport, get all our names and if 7 news could track down a douche then police could do worse.

i understand if you dont get what im saying. but dont take it the wrong way. we're a family and thats how it should be kept

Well said....

''dude, you have no idea how they twisted the story,, , they stole my old youtude clips and editied them making me look really really bad, you have no idea.. i spoke to them way longer than you got to see and spoke mainly about safety safety safety,, i wore a helmet to the interview and i thought it was the leadup interview to bathurst,, not about my old video idiocy, they really did a number on me..''

Another case of Channel 7 doing a shocking job at, well, their job.

thats fucked.
