I don't do DH skating (yet) but i thought that this would be a good idea.

The current problem with aero helmets is that they are unsafe when compaired to regular moto-x helmets. But the problem with moto-x helmets is they aren't the most aerodynamic thing out there. I was thinking if it would be posible to use paper mache to create a tail and a more aero chin guard. The best part about this is that it would crumple on impact. This means no more tails twisting your neck. Its also cheap and replaceable.

how much diffrence do you think a tail would make? not very much.

What are you going to do to the chin? cut it off and make a new one or add to it? if you add more to it how much more aero is it going to bo.

Just make a visor for the moto-x helmet and push the cheeks in so thats it channels the air around and flairs it off to the side.

If the tail doesnt make a difference then why do people use helmets with tails? I dont DH skate so im just trying to expand my longboarding knowledge.

I said not much, not absolutely no diffrence.

The wind comes off the back anyways, it has to do with where teh air goes imo, like on a car the spoiler is to give the car more traction on the back wheels, hence why FWD are stupid with a spoiler. Therefore if the air is channeling downwards behind the helmet it would increase traction on the back which is unwanted, the tail channels the air back not down. But at the speed your going at, concertrate on your tuck, the helmets safety

Aight, thanks i get it know.

It's been done. To much effort, not enough evidence that aero lids aren't safe.

they look cool. seriously ....and somehow i doubt a moto-x helmet with paper mache would look cool.

more and more riders are steering away from their longtails these days. even the fastest guys in the world don't use them.

Not worth it. Paper mache would not last in transport and unless its done absolutely right it would be a hinderance. If you are going to get into seriously competitive racing you will get something more suitable than a motocross helmet anyway

The more you can make the airflow "stick" to the surface of your helmet, the more aero it will be. Ideally you want the airflow to move along the side and top of the helmet and then meet seamlessly at the back. When air breaks off from the surface before then it creates turbulence. Most efforts to make things more aero concentrate on the back half of the item, making it fade to a point (like a longtail helmet).

I understand what you mean bugs, ill redo the visor and make it so its completely inside the hole without the arms .

My helmet does naturally come to a point on the back.

To add bugs, im thinking about making afew holes around the mouth section of the visor or a - airflow b - antifog c - audiobility.

Kinda like when your talking to a cityrail ticket person.

True, but the more contact, the greater parasite drag :) - important info if you're a plane... maybe not so much for skaters. Remember the world record wasn't done in aero mushroom lid....

Thomas - research buddy, the helmet topic has been discussed a trillion times, including threads on paper mache aero helmets...

aside from all that. you would look like a complete douche!

if you were that keen on trying it get some high quality foam to use instead so it doesnt look like a primary school project.

how much more speed do you think u can really get out of having an 'aerohelmet' compared to a MotoX helmet... are you looking at breaking speed records? or do you just want something to protect your mellon.
