ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

I came across this in the Sunday paper today and just had to share this with all of you. The first thing is that the two guys in the picture are not wearing any shoes now even the newest of groms would know that shoes would be a good thing to have when riding down a street, it helps to stop for one thing. As for the Big Sticks cost of $169 WTF get a broom stick and put an old wheel on the end. As if our sport has not got enough bad press about riding on the road to see two guys on a road with out safety equipment…..
They should just stick to the surf.

They probably aren't going very fast, so I don't think it is that big of a deal. Whilst it isn't something I would do, plenty of people cruise around barefoot. There are even decks with cork grip specifically for riding barefoot.

The big sticks may be a bit overpriced, but from what I understand, there is a fair bit more to them than a broom stick and a wheel. They are designed with specific flex properties in mind to maximize energy return. I have never actually tried one, nor am I likely too, but I think your broomstick statement would be similar to someone saying that $250 for a deck is a rip when you could just bolt some trucks to a $10 plank of wood.

That article was hardly 'bad press'. It was written in a positive manor, and was focusing on the benefits of skating.

I think you are making an issue out of nothing.
Well said James, I'm with you on this one. They aren't proclaiming to be downhill warriors. And if a big stick is what does it for you then go your hardest, we are all in it for the fun factor, so do what you want, why ripp on them.
i still find the article annoying for some reason :/
Yeah its a shame that they focused on something that is on the edge of our sport, just wondering, how many people here actually use or have used a big stick?
I've got no problem with it. It's really just an ad for the gear and the stores that sell it, disguised as a news story. In terms of whether it's good publicity or not, I'd say it's excellent publicity - very positive. Anything that shows people using the streets for fun shit instead of simply driving cars is A Good Thing. We all benefit from that shift in perspective.
