ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

Fellow riders,

I have a plan.
Maybe a very hare-brained plan.

I sort of want to longboard the Great Ocean Road.
The ride would either start or end in Torquay.
Thing is - I've never been there and can't really tell how good of a ride it is.
That's why I ask ye:

- Is it possible street-wise etc.?
- Which direction is better? East or West?
- Would I be able to sleep outside during December or is there rain / animals / weird people about?

My in-laws live at Port Fairy, which is at the westerly end of the Great Ocean Road. The weird thing about that place is the weather - even in summer it can be cold; like a max of 12 deg, but then the next day will be 35 deg.

That's about all I can tell you without guessing and making shit up.
the road is windy, narrow, and people look at the view not the road. on a bike maybe. not on a longboard
two words.. tourist drivers

i got car sick and threw up a milkshake on that road.. ahh good times lol
Ive ridden my pushy from Torquay to Appolo bay a few times and it is a trip for the brave. over summer it is a very well travelled roadway and as someone said above most people are watching the veiw. Road is narrow, rough in places, smooth in others up and down and winding.

the run down from big hill towards lLorne would be the funnest bit
Dave Cornthwaite of http://boardfree.co.uk/home.htm did this section in 2006 his site has pics vids and descriptions of the place he stayed (click on journeys, completed journeys and boardfree australia) He did it west to east (and tacked on the rest of Australia at either end!) He did have a full support team backup vehicles etc. which made it easier. But given the Kiwi who just did Europe, USA and China without any support the great ocean road can't be too tough.
OK, so I am back from Australia (broke collarbone testing a friend's new ride - freak accident - early ride home).

And I did skate the Great Ocean Road.
Admitted, I only did stretches at Bellbrae, Torquay and then Anglesea up to Apollo Bay.
But they were absolutely magnificent rides. Not that many tourists around, and sometimes you only had to turn off the GOR and right there were the best cruising and downhill tracks you could wish for.

My favorite piece was the hairpins and serpentine turns at a stretch called "Big Hill" on the commemorative stone wall thingies that goes down towards Lorne and then a dead-straight stretch that shoots into Apollo Bay with ocean views all the way.

There are around 10 videos and tons of pictures; once I'm done sorting and editing them, I'll put a few on here.

If anybody wants to do it, a few tips:
* Don't do it alone. This is not a safety thing (it was pretty safe altogether) but it's a lot easier if you have 3-4 people and one can take the car down to pick you up. People there don't take a lot of hitchhikers. I was only taken up the hill once in around 15 trials.
* Wear a helmet. This is a safety thing.
* If you can, have the driver go down before and radio up when it's free from his end. Sometimes I just had to hold on to my balls and go down without really knowing what was behind the next corner.
* Bring bathers and towels. After a few good runs you'll want to just jump into the ocean or lay down on the beach.

The surface is a little rough. If you snowboard, it's like having a little bit of hard snow or ice mixed in with the powder. My wheels (78A 71mm) took it quite nicely and you could slide the fuck out of it if you wanted.

If you have more time, I urge you to go into the Otways and skate a few of the roads in there. Often better concrete and way less cars.

I'll definitely do it again.
