ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

I've been out on marked roads with over 50 speed limits without knowing these limitations. I've had good things happen. I think we should also share positive stuff if we want positive stuff to happen.

Cops have driven past without stopping or giving me a hard time, and a couple of times I've had people pull over to watch or slow down to clock my speed. Sometimes at night, cars even give way.

I put it down to a couple of simple things:
1. I keep moving so i don't frustrate the locals or their traffic
2. As much fun as it may be, skateboarding is not cycling (peleton's piss me off), I keep small numbers where possible
3. I'm doing hills not mountains, so I guess people don't have the overwhelming urge to save my soul from what they perceive as a certain outcome.
4. I always treat a blind corner a s a potentially fatal corner
5. I try to skate during the daylight as much as possible, and if at night i wear a headlight.

Happy to your tips on hassle free skating

Ok so maybe this topic isn't radical, gnarly, or anti establishment enough to get comment. I'd like to raise a point though...

The Brisbane mall, are you retarded. Do you think you can beat the government??? do you think that your $500 board is going to outweigh the millions invested in maintaining our conformist society.

In previous generations (prior to 1990 -2000 for the younger ones) skin heads and punks used to battle in their hundreds in the mall with knives, chains and bats. the coppers managed to put those little insurrections down. I guess some of the older coppers are probably laughing about how piss weak things are these days.

Guys have been skating car parks and other places around Brisbane for years without hassle and without comment. Now we have a fad of skaters going anti establishment and f@#k the police.

Great, when you've drawn enough attention to yourselves, and the cops know where to look for you. And they warn the car park operators (which they will) and they put on more security guys, and none of us have a quiet skate spot anymore, and you've pissed off to your next radical X sport please come back occasionally to put your hand up and remind everyone that you were the dude.
Chris,

well said. There are a heap of us quietly whittling away (for those of you under 40 whittling is like getting a knife and a stick and just sort of sharpening the stick untill it is all gone) at the typecast misconceptions of the old "Skate and Destroy" mentality.

We even have cops on our side up here that work with us rather than against us. We often skate a new estate with nice hills and smooth as butter hotmix, the cops ask us to keep an eye out for people stealing stuff off the building sites or even just acting strangely in the area (it is amazing that they accept what we are doing as "normal" ) We have had cops stop and check our speeds for us with their radars and even ask traffic to go another way so we can slalom.

We have met some arsehole cops, but we meet more goodies than bad and the same with the public, they so often ask if they can watch and take pics/video not many step up when offered a go though (;-)>

So come on everyone, surely us oldies aren't the only ones with good tales to tell?

Cheers

yeh myself and the crew i was with at the time have been asked to move on by the cops 6 times in the last six months,by different cops ,i have not even been threaten of a fine, let alone heard it mentioned, they have all been pretty cool about it,only acting on a complaint or just doin what they know they have to,in a couple of cases the boys in blue have even felt bad and only acted because some loser has rung and made a complaint. i got no complaints,we usually just go somewhere else...i might be lucky i havent struck an asshole copper ...,maybe ill change my tune if i eventually cop a fine but until then..i dont worry in the slightest..just skate when and where u want..and know how to talk the talk when they come!
dude,i dont know the laws,i dont wanna know the laws ,most times i think they dont either, play dumb....'doh i didnt know i couldnt ride on this road?' like i said none of them have ever quoted the law or said it was illegal,im sure alot of cops dont know the laws concerning skateboards...so its just 'move on' from them.....its just a job to them..
always wave to passers by and smile..we have done this for years and 99 percent will do the same back..we had the fuzz called on us last week and they didnt even get out of the car..they just asked if we were getting some good speed up and left us alone..if you wear your helmet and pads and look the part they will usually see that your not a cowboy and let you be. if they want you to leave dont argue just pack up and go to the next spot..they are usually just waiting for skate punks to give em a reason to get tough, power trippers..ive been speedboarding for years and only ever got 1 $30 fine from a nazzi chick and we have been busted on some gnarly main roads..be nice and dont give em shit and they will usually leave you alone..lets change the steriotype of punk ass skaters and let em know long boarders are just there having fun without trashing the place..
mmm to me it just seems if u give the police the respect they generally feel they deserve they wil repay u
if u argue and answer back etc they will repay u with a fine no doubt
Yes indeed always wave to the passers by that's a courtesy thing for myself. And yes we had cops asking us about the sport and Even Ben has told me a story about how some people called the cops for noise complaints down a road which hits 100 and then has a massive foot break before an intersection, When the cops came they told them just to move on but they wanted to drive behind them for one last run to see how fast they were going, and just to see them do this epic road .
Oh and another really cool thing happen the other day when i was on a train to go meet up with Ash and the other guys for a skate there was i guy on the train from the sunny coast who was about 40 and straight when he walked on he goes ohh is that a dh board that looks sweet is that like bamboo with cf on the bottom and he was spot on except for the fiber glass part (A Glyde board) i was really surprised he even mentioned people skating cootha before and also knew a lot about the wheel urethane structure. He did say he use to bomb hills on little plastic boards in like the 70's 80's and has smashed his front teeth skating hills ouch!
Slalom session today at Sidonia, and all afternoon random people would drive up and stop to look for a while and have a chat. Some local kids sat watching for an hour or so, and a pair of local photographers wandered in to take some shots and chat.

Most people are interested and have a positive attitude about skating hills and racing.
Hey thanks guys, nice to hear there are plenty of good stories out there from both young and experienced skaters. Pretty amazing to think skateboarding has become well enough respected, for the police to have a genuine interest in how fast we are traveling.

I remember when you could count the skaters in an entire school on a single hand, now a days you can't see the skate park for all the people crowded around. They have TV channels exclusively dedicated to X sports, their are X game type competitions all around the world.

One day, despite our anti establishment heritage, we are going to have to admit we have become a mainstream sport. That we attract people from very diverse backgrounds.

Skateboarding is no longer the domain of 'the loner' from a lower socioeconomic background thrashing their frustrations out on a piece of forgotten concrete. We are now a part of a multimillion if not billion dollar international culture and business. The amount of money we spend alone on our quivers and protective gear are testimony to that.

Glad to hear that in many cases our perception within the public and law enforcerment can keep momentum with these progressions.

Keep the good stories rolling guys
